Windows XP SP3 x86 host
Windows 7 Beta 1 x64 guest
I have a "Multimedia Audio Device" in device manager with a yellow exclamation point. Windows Update finds no further updates; I instructed Windows to automatically download drivers from the web, but it didn't make a difference.
I pointed the Update Driver wizard to an extracted Guest Additions drivers folder, but it found no drivers for sound. I tried the SB 16 driver, but then the "Multimedia Audio Device" disappeared altogether. I tried changing "Windows 7 (64-bit)" under OS Type to "Windows Vista (64-bit)", with no change.
All I can assume now is there is a conflict because I'm running XP x86 (Athlon X2 64 processor) for the host. I realize this isn't the ideal setup, but I don't have a copy of XP x64... Any other ideas before I delete my VDI?

No sound under windows 7 RC 64-bit similar to above. Try following web link. Worked for me but is a little scratchy at times.

Re: No sound card under Windows 7 Beta 1 x64 guest
using sound with this driver kills virtualization performance on my 2.4ghz MBP. when win7 64bit rc is idling, VirtualBox shows a pretty nice steady 13% CPU usage on host. if i start playing an MP3 in win7, host cpu usage runs up to 90%.
has anyone tested this with 32bit win7?

If you have installed the realtek latest drivers you should have Windows check for updates.
Seems they have the drivers now, or at least several people said they did and it took care of the sound problems for them.

Re: No sound card under Windows 7 Beta 1 x64 guest
I'm truly sorry for the delay in responding to this thread.
I tried the driver Perryg suggested and I now have sound in my VM.
Thanks for the link BajaPaul, but I haven't tried it, as my problem seems to be resolved for now.
I haven't tested the audio enough to find out if it slows my VM or not (in my short tests it didn't seem to have a problem keeping up).
I'm still unclear as to why I don't have an update showing in Windows Update for the sound card driver (I suppose the driver that is available is 32-bit only? This would explain why it has never showed for me).
Thanks again everyone,
-Ian

Re: No sound card under Windows 7 Beta 1 x64 guest
i did some further testing on using the virtual sound card performance with these realtek drivers for 64-bit and standard MS drivers for 32-bit, results not very good either way, made a new thread - http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=17557
