Serial Ports for WinXP Guests

Post by ionphaser »

I'm running VBox 2.1.4 on Vista x64 host and have a question on configuring Serial Ports for WinXP guests. The problem is that the WinXP guest isn't seeing the serial port configured in VBox. I know the VBox serial settings work as a WinNT4 guest, identically configured, sees the com port and opens it correctly. However, the WinXP guest isn't seeing the com settings at all and isn't reporting a com port as available. I've manually tried to install a com port, but, this doesn't seem to work either. Neither VBox nor the XP guest report an error.

VBox Serial Ports settings:
Port Number: COM1
Port Mode: Host Device
Port Path: COM1

I'm also seeing this problem using Solaris 10 as a guest but that's another thread.

Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks.

You could try some tool like aida diagnostics to see if something is hugging the port io/irq. Did you also look at the hidden devices under device manager?

I have the same problem! I used AIDA and nobody seems to be hugging the port's io/irq.

Any ideas?

Re: Serial Ports for WinXP Guests

Post by PeasantKing »

I am having the same problem with Virtual Box 2.2 with Windows Vista 64 Bit Ultimate and XP Pro guest. Using a Dell Laptop.

Setup:

VBox Serial Ports settings:
Port Number: COM1
Port Mode: Host Device
Port Path: COM1

Checked AIDA for resources same thing nothing is taking either resource. I check hidden drivers in the XP Pro Devices ther is a Serial Port with Exclamation details are that the driver is not working.

I have even tried an Aten USB Serial Port. The Guest system does not even recognize it when I plug it in. Tried mapping this to virtual serial port 2 with path as COM21 which Vista Reports as the com port and I tested to work and it simply does not even boot. Get error that says COM21 does not exist.

Anyone help? Would love to switch from VMWare but Serial Port is really important for me. Any direction or more information I can provide?

Thanks,

The Peasnt King.

No updates on this subject I assume no one has found a solution. I search the bugs as well and nothing has been reported against this.

If anyone has a solution or more stuff to try please post. If not I am going to report a bug against this in a couple of days.

Thanks,

This is no help to you, but it might give you some hope. I am also running Vista (64 bit) with an XP pro (32 bit) guest. My serial port is a Prolific USB -> serial adaptor. I had a bit of a time figuring out how to map the ports from one machine to the other, since the host serial port wasn't what I expected, but once I had that straightened out it did work.

Now, here's the bad news. It was so slow that it was useless for my rather ordinary purposes.

I've since tried to hook the USB device directly to the VM, but although the VM says that the device is captured the guest XP system can't see it or use id.

Hi all,

Maybe it's too late or even the problem was still solved, anyway. There is a poor coding for the Prolific chipstes out there, so for drivers of course.
And in fact the last and more recent Prolific PL-2303 USB to Serial Bridge drivers, published on the official Prolific site (search throughout) did the job with this conf:

- VBox 3.02 for Mac; therefore Mac OS X Leopard Host machine;

- Windows XP Pro with SP 3, and updated, as Guest;

- NO COM setup on virtualmachine config, just let the usb controller do the job directly.

So went the trick.

- In the Windows xp guest machine: installed the driver, plugged the usb adapter, and voilà, serial port correctly recognized and configured (as COM 3 here) .

Have to say, VBox rocks again in this.

Hope it'll be useful to some other.

Best regards.

I've the same problem using XP as Guests.

I can not use real COM ports neither USB-to-Serial Com ports from my host machine.

I have supposed this was due to a problem with usb-to-serial drivers but also 1 real COM port (COM1 on motherboard) is not available in the virtual machine.

I just see a yellow warning in device listing near Serial Plug and play device (I can see it choosing "show hidden devices")

Any idea of solution ?

thanks

I know this is an old post, but the problem persisted for me. Do you guys happen to have MS ActiveSync running? It'll be sitting in the system tray, and automatically starts with windows. I uninstalled it, and my Prolific Serial-USB adapter works fine now (running Windows XP x64 on Mac OS X 10.6.4)
