According to Ubuntu they are using the X version 1.7.* in the Beta. You will need to change the version if you want guest additions to work. Alpha used 1.6.*.

I have no idea where you got that info, and only one user states that Ubuntu uses 1.7.x, but if you check the repo, you will see it's still 1.6.0. This xserver-xorg-common package for example, still shows version 1.6.0: http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/x11/xserver-common
Xorg itself is still at it usual version 7.4. I have a Jaunty VM, installed from Alpha and fully updated, so it's the same as a clean beta (maybe some more recent packages) and that too notes 1.6.0 as xserver version.

Ouch! That hurt......
Just passing along the information from one of the Administrators of the Ubuntu Forums Sasquatch. (Last posting) .
I would not post anything that I thought was not as accurate as possible. I forward posts that you yourself have made.
I too have it running but it started out as an alpha and updated accordingly.

I guess since it is still not ratified and may change before the release date all information is also subject to change. Therefore I will refrain from suggesting a solution that has not been properly veted.

Just did that last night and after adding the guest additions it won't restart, goes to a login prompt and nothing happens.
So I've deleted the machine, started over, and haven't installed the Guest additions yet. Stuck at 800 x 600 resolution max.
I didn't record the error message when installing the guest additions but it was something about not being able to identify the video manager (or something to that effect) and skipped installing the vbox drivers.
Thought I would do some forum searching before I tried again and looks like I found the spot.

I'm on an Acer Laptop with Ubuntu (now 9.01 Beta) as my host.

Mandriva 2009 worked fine BTW

Edit: This is the error it gave, same as kimec posted.
Warning: unknown version of the X Window System installed. Not installing
X Window System drivers.

How strange. I've attached a screenshot of the X version that the Beta has by default run. This is from a LiveCD, so it should be the same as the install.
Now, the installer has noted 1.5.99.* | 1.6.* as case for the installer. Just do the trick I noted on the first page, so it states 1.6.0 and see how that goes.

New user here, I ran the command to extract everything to the ga folder. Modified and saved the install.sh file but now I don't know how to run the GA from the GA folder using the modified install.sh file. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I believe I stated that, but I will check again and modify if needed. All you need to do, is run the script as if you would run the GA installer itself. So run sudo ./install.sh in the target folder after the change, and the GA should install.

Sasquatch wrote:Hmm, I have a fully updated Jaunty in a VM, no problems with the GA driver. I do have the GA from 2.1.2 installed there though, but that shouldn't matter all that much. I'll update them now to see how it goes.

I see the problem. It doesn't know the 1.6 version of xserver. The beta, which was version 1.5.99 was still working. It checks for a version and that doesn't match the installed version. You might want to edit the file yourself and change the version check. You have to unpack the run file first.

More info for how to install it properly. First you need to extract the installer. So run VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86/amd46.run --target ~/ga (you need the destination folder first of course). Then check the install.sh file, on line 415, you will see this:
15 1.5.99.* | 1.6 )
Now after the 1.6, add a .0. This is needed, because the version that is returned by X -version is 1.6.0, not 1.6.

After you've fixed the install script, run it like you would install the GA.run file. So sudo ./install.sh.
sorry to sound so dum but how do you extract the installer im new to ubuntu

Tim, create a folder in your home directory called ga to start.

Run the command sasquatch posted (with your VBoxadditions file in its place) and then you need to edit the install.sh file as root after it's extracted.

sudo kate install,sh for Kubuntu

sudo gedit install.sh for Ubuntu

You can press F4 to open a terminal on the file you want to edit

Using Sasquatch's approach, I have been able to get to a point where my guest Ubuntu 9.04 resizes automatically. Great! However, I cannot enable visual effects. Starting with the System menu I can navigate to here:

System > Preferences > Appearance > [Tab] Visual Effects

But when I select something other than "None," such as "Normal" or "Extra" I see a dialog that says "Searching for drivers" and then "Could not enable desktop effects." Has anyone had success with this? If so, were there any steps other than adding the 1.6.0|* as mentioned above?

Thanks!
