VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (rc=-1908)

Post by joshuaviktor »

I apologize, as I believe this might have been answered, but I am unable to get any of the answers I found to work.

I am fairly new to virtualbox, but I am familiar with VMware.

Anyway - Symptoms.

I installed virtualbox, and created a Windows Server 2008 v-machine. worked, installed, coolness was had.

This is on an Opensolaris host, latest build.

Anyway, I rebooted the host, and started up VirtualBox from terminal. It started up fine. I tried to start the win2k8 box, and it errored out with the above error, and also telling me to make sure the kernel module was installed correctly.

I uninstalled VirtualBox and installed the latest version (2.1.2). I recreated the 2008 box, and it worked fine. I rebooted the opensolaris host, and I got the same error when I tried to start the guest.

Help?

Massive log file below.

Does /platform/i86pc/kernel/drv/amd64/vboxdrv and
/platform/i86pc/kernel/drv/vboxdrv exist?

Is this module loaded by the kernel? Check with
modinfo | grep vbox

If vboxdrv is not loaded, try to load the module with
modload -p drv/vboxdrv
Are there any errors when loading the module?

/dev/vbox* devices are needed, too. Do they exist?

In other words, it looks like it is not loading the module, can't load the module, and the vbox drivers aren't there.

Ok, Cool. I will attempt to look up answers to this, but if you have them, that would be great too!

And thanks!

Check /var/adm/messages for any errors that might get logged
when you try to load the vboxdrv module.

Is there a vboxdrv line in /etc/name_to_major ?
grep vboxdrv /etc/name_to_major

This is on an Opensolaris host, latest build.

Anyway, I rebooted the host, and started up VirtualBox from terminal. It started up fine. I tried to start the win2k8 box, and it errored out with the above error, and also telling me to make sure the kernel module was installed correctly.
I suspect that there could be a problem with building the
/platform/i86pc/boot_archive and
/platform/i86pc/amd64/boot_archive files on reboot.

Try to uninstall vbox 2.1.2 and reinstall it, then run
bootadm update-archive

Does that build new boot_archive files?

Tried a couple of things

Post by joshuaviktor »

I did not get the chance to reinstall, but I will try that tomorrow.

I did check for vboxdrv:

bash-3.2# grep vboxdrv /etc/name_to_major
vboxdrv 298
bash-3.2#

and got the messages out of /var/adm

I cut and pasted into star office, and ran a search for vbox and vboxdrv. No joy.

Pasting here in case it is useful: (Its long, sorry)

bash-3.2# grep vboxdrv /etc/name_to_major

This file (with that vboxdrv line) should be included in the boot_archive
and is be used on a reboot.

My theory is that somehow the boot_archive is not in sync with the
files in the root filesystem, or gthat rub loads a boot_archive file from the
wrong partition. That might explain why vboxdrv works after installing
it, but fails after a reboot...

This should normally never happen. But anyway, could you please check /etc/devlink.tab for existence of vboxdrv?

What is reported when you trace system calls for that command, with
truss modload -p drv/vboxdrv ?

bash-3.2# cat devlink.tab
#ident "%Z%%M% %I% %E% SMI"
#
# Copyright (c) 1998 by Sun Microsystems, Inc.
#
#
# This is the table used by devlinks
#
# Each entry should have 2 fields; but may have 3. Fields are separated
# by single tab ('\t') characters.
#
# The fields are:
#
# devfs-spec: a keyword-value set of devfs specifications, describing the set
# of devfs node entries to be linked.
#
# The keywords are:
#
# type - The devinfo node type (see <sys/sunddi.h> for possible values)
#
# name - the devinfo node name (the part of a /devices entry that appears
# before the '@' or ':').
#
# addr - the devinfo node address part (the portion of the name between
# the '@' and the ':').
#
# minor - the minor-attributes (the portion of a /devices name after the
# ':').
#
# The keywords are separated from their valuse by an equals ('=') sign;
# keyword-value pairs are separated from each other by semicolons (';').
#
# dev name - the /dev name corresponding to the devfs node described by
# the devfs-spec field. This specification is assume to start rooted at
# /dev; THE INITIAL /dev/ SHOULD NOT BE SPECIFIED!
# The name can contain a number of escape-sequences to include parts of
# the devfs-name in the /dev/-name. These escape-sequences all start with
# a backslash ('\') character. The current sequences are:
#
# \D - the devfs 'name' field
#
# \An - the 'n'th component of the address field (n=0 means the whole
# address field)
#
# \Mn - the 'n'th component of the minor field (n=0 means the entire
# minor field).
#
# \Nn - a sequential counter, starting at n (a *single* digit, giving
# a starting range of 0 through 9).
#
# extra dev link - a few devices need a second link; that is, a second link
# pointing to the first link. This optional field specifies the /dev
# format of this second link. This entry can also use the above-described
# escape-sequences.
#
# Fields can be blank; seperated by single tab characters,
# Spaces are significant, and are considered part of a field. IN GENERAL THIS
# MEANS THERE SHOULD BE NO SPACE CHARACTERS IN THIS FILE!

Installation of <SUNWvbox> was successful.
bash-3.2# bootadm update-archive
updating /platform/i86pc/amd64/boot_archive
updating /platform/i86pc/boot_archive
bash-3.2#

It worked. The deinstallation, reinstallation, and then the bootadm command worked. I started, stopped, rebooted host and guest multiple times. Rock and roll!

Thanks to the absolutely fantastic people here! Thank you!

There's a bug with this. -1 is an invalid error code for a failed system call.

Not sure if this a solaris kernel bug, or a bug with the vboxdrv module?

Now the question is why the boot archive was corrupted, and
why Solaris didn't complain at boot that the archive was out of sync.

On a regular reboot, poweroff, halt, ... the boot archive should
automatically be refreshed after drivers have been installed
(e.g. the vboxdrv). Has there been a system panic after you installed
virtualbox? Or maybe a power failure? Something like this could
explain why the boot_archive wasn't automatically updated.

There could have been a power failure. The machine is my dad's, and I came over one night to find it had been powered down. I don't know if it was done gracefully. Probably not. My dad is a Mac head, and I would guess, doesn't even know how to do a graceful shutdown. (Ok, I admit it took me a head scratch when "Shutdown -h now" didn't work, also.)

Background:
This whole project is a kind of a kludge. He wants a movie server with ZFS, streaming to his appleTV. So I am trying to do this with virtualbox, a copy of win2k8 server running with iTunes, and a shared library (the ZFS partitions).

He wants ZFS since he could not get a good raid card to work in this machine. I installed server in case I needed to run any other services (DNS server, DHCP, or whatever), and iTunes runs fine on it.

So now I can see the shared library on another machine, but I can't connect to it. :)

Fun fun fun. Maybe I'll try Firefly.

JKeil, thank you.
