Any reason to upgrade?

Post by 09KR0058 »

I've been running VB v6.1.18 on a Windows 10 host and Win 7 Ultimate guest for about 14 years. Its been rock solid and I've always skipped the upgrade prompt when starting VB. Any pros/cons on going to a current 7.2 release?
I'm a firm believer in the old saying: If it ain't broke, don't fix it! :D

Thanks

If you only run an unchanging Windows 7 VM on an unchanging Windows 10 Host then there shouldn't be any problem remaining with the 'old' (unsupported) VirtualBox version, as there would be little, if anything, to gain by upgrading unless/until you decide to be more adventurous and take a walk on the wild side

If it does work, don't try to fix it can work.

There are plenty who would welcome Microsoft, Apple and others adopting a similar philosophy; and it seems (to me) that most of the VirtualBox upgrades/updates that you've missed out on since version 6.1.XX have been driven almost entirely by the need to respond constantly to external hardware and operating system development/changes. But I'm a macOS, Windows 11 and Linux User so have to continue on the treadmill of ongoing upgrades :?

And it's quite hard to blame them, given that too often it's the updates themselves, especially if "automatic", which create previously nonexistent problems and malfunctions, causing significant wasted time (and... associated nervous system wear).

I guess it would be really interesting to know how many hours get spent globally, every day, just trying to get systems back to working as they did before yet another sudden unrequested update...
