Win11 Guest while host without TPM 2.0 nor UEFI

Post by Leloup78 »

Bonjour,

On my old PC, I can't install Win11 because of the hardware specifications: no TPM 2.0 and no UEFI (Legacy BIOS).
So, in the limited case of this PC, I wonder if, within VirtualBox, it would be possible to install a Win11 Guest anyway? :?:
Or to put the same question differently, has anyone with a PC without TPM 2.0 nor UEFI managed to create a Win11 Virtual Machine? :?:

The required UEFI and TPM settings only apply to the Windows Virtual Machine. The Host capability (or the lack of it) are not passed through to the VM.

Just use the required settings when creating the VM, i.e. VirtualBox emulates TPM2.0 and UEFI is just the architecture that has to be applied to the VM. However, if your Host's CPU does not meet Microsoft's minimum requirement, that will be recognised by the Win11 installer and prevent installation unless you apply the same workaround that can be used to install Windows 11 on a physical PC/Laptop which doesn't have a supported CPU.

If you have a Windows machine, you can use the free software Rufus to easily bypass Microsoft's Windows 11 requirements. If your machine runs Windows 10, it can run Windows 11.

How to install Windows 11 your way (and avoid Microsoft's restrictions)

My processor, the Phenom II X4 840, does not appear on the MS list. Athlon, Phenom, Sempron, and Turion processors that do not appear on either of these two lists should therefore not be able to run Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2. Even though I think it's possible to create a virtual machine with TPM 2.0 and UEFI, I don't think it's possible to handle the full SSE4.2 instruction set that the processor doesn't support.
