Games don't run on XP or W7

Post by Betelgeuze »

I have installed on Windows XP and 7 via Virtualbox.

When trying to play the Agatha Christie Hidden Object Games (Death on The Nile, Peril at End House, Dead Man's Folly and 4:50 From Paddington) I get the following issues:

Or the game just doesn't start, or I get the following message: "Could not initialize Direct3D. To solve this problem you may want to check that the latest version of DirectX and latest version of drivers for your video card are correctly installed".

Can anyone tell me how I can solve this issue?

Thanks!

For current VirtualBox versions there is no support for 3D acceleration for Windows XP guests.

For Windows 7 it is available, I guess you didn't install VirtualBox Guest Additions (which contains the necessary graphics driver). See docs.

Most modern games require a real video card, real video drivers from AMD, Intel, or Nvidia, and DirectX system support from Windows. VirtualBox does not offer or support any of those for XP or W7 VMs. VirtualBox does not emulate a real video card or allow real video drivers to be installed.

If you have a modern Windows host, you should be able to choose XP or W7 compatibility mode and get the game to work. If you have a Linux host machine, Steam should be able to work with many Windows games.
