VM causing network instability and packet loss

Post by daleb »

Host OS: macOS 15.6.1 (same issue on previous few versions too)
Host hardware: Mac mini 2018
Network: WiFi disabled on host, ethernet connection active, DHCP reservation configured for the host 192.168.1.230 and for the VM 192.168.1.231. Router is a Unifi UDM SE.
VM network config: Bridged Adapter, en0 ethernet, Intel Pro/1000 MT Desktop, deny promiscuous, unique MAC, cable connected ticked.
Virtualbox version: 7.1.12 (same issue on previous version)

Issue: VirtualBox VM is running Home Assistant OS and has been working without issue up until now. However I recently had instances of my router notifying me of the WAN connection going down and then restoring multiple times an hour as well as network clients experiencing incredibly poor latency. Confirmed no issues ISP side as well as local network side. This seemed to resolve itself after maybe 48 hours.
A week later I found that the Home Assistant backups hadn't been completing and the logs suggested that the Supervisor wasn't running. Performed a reboot on the VM, which sorted that out, however I immediately then encountered the WAN connection interruption notifications again and WiFi clients experiencing slow connectivity. I checked the router dashboard which showed constant 40-50% packet loss. Attributing this issue to the VirtualBox VM, I powered off the VM and instantly the packet loss dropped to 0% and normal network connectivity resumed. Powered up again, then the same issue occurred, so pretty confident the issue lies there.
When the issue occurs, I can access the Home Assistant dashboard successfully.
I've updated the host OS and updated VirtualBox to the latest version.
I'm trying to figure out the root cause and your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
