DiInstallDriverW Error installing Win 7 guest additions 7.1.6

Installing Guest Additions version 7.1.6 (Rev 167084) into a Windows 7 (32-bit) image results in error:

*** Error: Installing driver(s) failed with 1 errors, 0 warnings (rc=VERR_INSTALLATION_FAILED)

Did you try installing the VBox certificates in the ISO cert/ directory?

Same Problem with 7.1.6.
Linux Mint 22.1 host, Win 10 guest.
I followed your Tip w installing cert. Some certs were already installed, some not.
But installing Guest Additions still failed.

I have the same issue -- are there instructions on installing certificates? I am not sure what it means and a cursory search hasn't made it clear to me yet.

I did this, but also forgot I had not run the install .exe as Administrator and ended up doing both, which solved the issue. Maybe I didn't need to do the cert install first if I had remember to run the .exe as Administrator.

really? In never installed certificates manually since 6.0.x
I also only read from the documentation that the certificates should or must be installed beforehand for an unattended installation.
Are these certificates not also installed with the installer?

However, I had installed the certificates manually via administrator and there were messages about certificates that already existed and a few that were installed (because new?)

The errors listed by the thread opener were still there afterwards. (Note: Win 8.1 for me, I made a mistake in my post. I have Win 8.1 and Win 10 guests, but so far I have installed the guest additions for Win 8.1, not Win 10 - sorry)

@pentagonik, I raise this objection with the appropriate humility, because you seem to be a developer/maintainer/supporter of the Guest Additions - so if you say: that's the way it is, then I don't want to and can't contradict that. Nevertheless, the manual installation of the certificates does not seem to have worked for me.

Same here. Went back to 7.1.4 and everything works like a charm, so I daresay something is at least different (if not wrong) with 7.1.6 on Windows 8.1.

Same problem for me. Even after installing the certificates manually with the command:

VBoxCertUtil.exe add-trusted-publisher vbox*.cer --root vbox*.cer

In addition to the “supR3HardenedWinSpawn” error since 7.1.6. I think I'll downgrade to 7.1.4 while waiting for a less buggy version
