Any ARM guests with guest additions?

Post by FirstLooks »

I'm running VirtualBox 7.1.2 on an M2 Mac, with Ubuntu 24.10 ARM installed - but there seem to be no guest additions available. Are there any ARM guest systems that have guest-addition support for VB on Apple Silicon? Many thanks for any information.

If you mount the guest additions image in your VM, you should see VBoxLinuxAdditions-arm64.run

This works as expected in a Debian guest. Have you tried in your Ubuntu guest?

This was a case of user-stupidity. I simply didn't see it! Thank you - and apologies for wasting time and bandwidth.

Follow-up. I installed the Ubuntu additions, but when I try to drag-and-drop either to/from the macOS Sequoia host, I get a message saying that the additions are either not installed or not running properly. Drag and drop is set from the menu as "Bidirectional"; the other options don't work either.

However, clipboard exchange seems to work in both directions, even though it caused an "internal error" in Ubuntu when I first tried to copy form the guest. Am I right to think that the guest additions must be running if clipboard exchange is working?

I guessed that Oracle Linux might be a better fit with Oracle VirtualBox, so I installed Oracle Linux Server in VB on an M2 Mac, and enabled the GUI with this procedure:

https://erpstuff.com/viewtopic.php?t=11097

I then mounted the guest additions CD and let it run automatically to install the guest additions. But, even after restarting, I can't make the clipboard or drag and drop work. When I try to run it again, it produced a cascade of error messages.

Am I doing something obviously wrong? Has anyone got the guest additions to work with any GUI-based Linux distro running under VirtualBox on Apple Silicon? If so, could anyone offer step-by-step instructions? Very grateful for any help.

Does not work for me either.

I suggest you file a bug ticket, including the (zipped) log from a session where you see the failure.

Thanks for confirming. Meanwhile, can anyone report an ARM-based Lunux with working guest additions for a macOS setup??

I have installed Oracle Linux 8.8 Guest OS (Arm64) on Apple Silicon M1 (macOS 14.7.1) Host using VBox 7.1.4 Setup. But Guest Additions installation failed with complile error, so posted Community post as I'm not able to file a Bug for the issue.

To try with other guest addition versions, I downloaded Guest Additions v7.1.0 and mounted it and ran the command "sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions-arm64.run" that worked perfectly and guest addition was installed succesfully.

Now Copy/Paste, Sharing folders are working fine for me.

Question: is there a link to the guest additions downloads?

You can find the guest additions ISOs for older versions of VirtualBox by looking through https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/
