Often "hangs"/does not get to desktop under Ubuntu (with log files)

Post by jnb »

Windows 11 Host, VB 7.0.20, Ubuntu 24.04 Guest.

From time to time over the years I have intermittently had "VB boots Ubuntu Guest but does not finish "waiting" cursor and desktop does not appear".

Lately, for unknown reason/no particular reason I am getting this a lot more frequently. Windows Task Manager shows no more time being used by VB/VM. "Waiting" cursor stays visible. VB boot is not getting as far as the desktop, since when it does I see the initial "smaller" window expanded to the "bigger" window I have set, that happens late in boot and does not happen here (at least in this occurrence and I think always but not certain).

Sending "Shutdown" signal to guest from VB "close" menu never works, it stays as is. I have to select "Power off", that does work. Then restart goes in fine. But as I say, lately this has become a lot more frequent.

I attach logs. Is someone able to decipher just how far/where the boot got to from this, please?

Seeing very similar behavior here.

Windows 10 Host, Virtual Box 7.1.4, Ubuntu 24.04 Guest

It's almost random but I have noticed two things:

This happens with guest additions installed only. Guests work just fine until the additions are installed
I have a 23.04 Ubuntu VM that is working just fine on the same host.

My suspicion is something with guest additions however I just don't know where to start looking.

Thank you for replying. (Only just found this, as it seems we have to explicitly "subscribe" to any topic we create to be notified, I assumed it would apply to topics we create.)

As I understand VB, I really need to be using the Guest Additions, right? So I can't just not install them. Did you happen to have a look at the log I pasted, does that tell us anything?

Ubuntu is unhappy "living" in a virtual world. The work-around is select "machine"/"reset" from the Vbox Manager whenever this happens. This hang often happens when Ubuntu does a major update to the firmware or Oracle does an upgrade.

Is this issue and the following issue related?

viewtopic.php?p=549463#p549463

I am now experiencing what is being described here as well as the issue I reported in August. It takes several Machine resets for Ubuntu to boot properly.

I do not believe the issue I originally reported got the attention it deserved and needed.

Yes I think all these threads are on the same topic. And btw I at least sometimes get the hang on boot but also on shutdown (have to power off), about as frequently as each other.

Looking now in VBox (7.0.20) Help at 3.1. Supported Guest Operating Systems I had no idea that the last "officially" supported Ubuntu release is 20.04 which is now 4 years ago. Without wanting to get anyone's back up, how often does this change/when might we expect to see Ubuntu 24.x supported?

And while we are on the topic: the Guest Additions we install and use, are these supplied by Ubuntu or by Virtual Box?

I've been seeing this as well, since upgrading from 6.1.50 to 7.0.x a few months ago. The host is Ubuntu 2204 with guests from multiple Ubuntu generations up to 24 (hence the forced move to 7.xx), so the problem certainly looks like a 7.x regression; and clearly also Guest rather than Host since OP is running W11. Also present in both 7.0 and 7.1 branches.

Although it seems to only manifest during guest startup and shutdown (for me it's nearly always netaplan that hangs during boot) I have had guests go unresponsive (permahung) very occasionally, which is also new. That *could* be the same bug, but the 7.x changes were obviously sweeping enough that it could easily be unrelated.

I've seen the shutdown hangs occasionally as well, but the guests are only restarted very rarely, and with the runtime lockups those shutdowns are now even more rare, so I can't add anything helpful there.

I've noticed that Ubuntu 24.04 will sometimes not restart either unless the Virtual Machine is first powered off. I've seen this occur several times where the Virtual Machine will not even reach POST.

I had hoped my attached log files would give someone a clue.
It happens to me regularly on both startup and shutdown.

I don't have a solution but a possible workaround: toggling into/out of fullscreen mode using Host+F, which works most of the time (hopefully for you, too). EDIT: assuming the VM is even responsive, so perhaps I am solving a different (more minor) issue.
