Black screen on boot with Ubuntu 24.04+VB 7.1.4+guest extensions

Post by Tronmch2 »

Ever since 7.1, and I think 7.0.x, Linux video has been "interesting..." My current issue:

After performing fresh installs of Ubuntu 24.04 and 24.04.1, I get:
  • A black screen instead of the gdm login screen. If I resize the display using view/Virtual Screen1/{new resolution}, I can login... And then...
  • A black screen instead of the desktop... Solvable the same way
I am using VB 7.1.4 on Windows 10, but this isn't limited to Windows hosts... The same thing happens in the guest when the host is Linux.

I GUESS this is marginally better than the display corruption I was seeing before, but it's still disturbing. VMWare workstation has become unusable on Linux because it takes out the host PC's network stack. I'm afraid to make that test on my windows host because my company is Windows centric, and I can't access the VPN I need to work from Linux...

KVM isn't much of an option for this since I need a multi-platform hypervisor... Which also rules out Hyper-V.

Any particular logs I should be chasing down to see why I need to force a video mode change to get a display?

I have the same issue, and unfortunately, also lack a solution. If anything, it seems to be mostly problematic with gdm3. XFCE with lightdm didn't seem to have the problem as badly, but switching from gdm3 to lightdm or vice-versa has been problematic for me (leftover configuration files, I guess). But for some reason, I got it to quit having this problem on one of my VMs, but have not yet figured out why. Weird.
