Cannot run Windows 11 24H2

Post by freezer »

Last week Microsoft posted Windows 11 24H2 build to MSDN (this is the final version of Windows 11 24H2, not an insider nor beta build). However, I cannot get it to work with VirtualBox. I created a new VM and attached the ISO. The BIOS loads, the CD prompts to hit a key to start install, after that the VM just hangs. It never starts the Windows 11 installer. If I change the ISO back to 23H2 and restart the machine it boots correctly.

As a test I took an existing Windows 11 23H2 VM and loaded the ISO while in Windows. From Windows I ran the installer which copies new files to the drive. It then reboots the machine to finish the install. When this reboot happens the VM hangs (Windows 11 never loads). So there's something about the Windows 11 24H2 kernel and VirtualBox.

I have tried playing with various VM settings such as the chipset, EFI on/off, SecureBoot, etc. I am running VirtualBox 7.1.0 using Windows 10 64-bit as my host OS.

I have the same issue and have tried the same things with no solution.

I'm running 7.1.2

Update,

I got it to boot the ISO by changing in settings>system>acceleration and unchecking Enable Nested Paging

I applied this to a new VM and I was able to start the install but then windows install crashed with a blue screen.

Maybe it will work for someone else or point someone to the issue.

Same here, I can't install Windows 11 LTSC (based on Win11 24H2) on virtualbox 7.1.2 (actually I upgraded from 6.2.50, I thought the latest version would install it, but it didn't)

Thanks, after changing that it indeed no longer freezes at the Virtualbox boot screen, but yes, the blue screen.

I can confirm your findings. If I disable 'Enable Nested Paging' then the Windows 11 24H2 ISO starts loading. But I can't make it very far into the Windows setup as the VM crashes or hangs.

I've updated a running windows 11 23H2 virtual machine to 24H2 and it does not boot. unchecking the "nested paging" I got a blue screen during boot.

On windows 11 compatible host the vm being upgraded receives a Windows bug check 5C on restart after 24H2 installed ok , 5c is

"This indicates that the HAL initialization failed. The hardware abstraction layer is low level code that is intialized early in the Windows start up."

... portion of bootlog's below for clean 23H2 boot and and problem 24H2 boot during restart

Is this virtualbox or windows issue - its the hardware abstraction layer (HAL) ?

Scenario:

-windows 11 compatible h/w: intel gen13 i5-1340P
-host windows 11 23H2 with virtualbox v7.0.10
-both vm's have TPM 2.0/Secure boot enabled
-both vm's were originally 22H2 fresh installs, both upgraded to 23H2 successfully when it came out
-media: 24H2 iso official release

**Issue: during upgrade 23H2 to 24H2 VM does not boot after initial setup completesand restarts:

this topic had same error as I described above - check your vm log for same before making this change , vm is now upgraded 23H2 to 24H2 - was able to also apply latest patches , everything looks ok.

see: viewtopic.php?t=110409

cd "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox"
VBoxManage modifyvm "win11" --hpet on

For a fresh install of Windows 11, no it didn't work for me, still frozen at the virtualbox startup screen.

Windows 11 24H2 is giving many errors, my NatNetwork connection stopped working, I restored the previous version of Windows and it was fixed.

recommend you look at the boot log (right mouse in GUI - show log ) and at minimum post section leading up to failure

I'm running into the same issue. Host is Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC IoT and guest is also Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC IoT. Creating a new VM and trying to boot it results in the "press any key to boot from dvd..." and then it just sits at the virtualbox splash screen. Trying to set hpet(i.e. VBoxManage modifyvm "win11" --hpet on) on results in the same thing. Disabling Nested Paging does get me to the Windows 11 installer and does the usual Windows install stuff. But after the installer ran and windows boots for the first time, Virtualbox crashes. If I then enable Nested Paging again, the virtual machine just sits at the Virtualbox splash screen.

I've attached the log file from the VM that I enabled hpet on and disabled Nested Paging to install windows 11, then re-enabled Nested Paging.

I've tried it several times without success. If i deaktivate nested paging the VM starts, but it runs in a bluescreen. After this it rollback the Update from 24H2 to 23H2. Win11 23H2 runs without problems. Tested in the newes Version 7.1.4r165100 incl. extension pack.

noticed in your log the chipset is ICH9 - all my win 11 are PIIX3 - think thats the default when you choose win 11 as os template to use, is this something your sure about ? , the bugcheck associated with the log you posted is todo with incompatible drivers (bugcheck 0xa here:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windo ... s-or-equal )
