About Ubuntu 24

Post by andro »

Ubuntu 24.04 hangs during installation on 7.1.0. As it has done with the previous two versions.

I know there is a helpful poster here who is immediately going to point out that Ubuntu is not supported.

But I'm afraid I must ask a question. With Ubuntu being one of the very most widely used Linux distros, why on earth is it not supported? I don't understand. It used to work for many years - supported or not. I observe several threads here with serious issues about Ubuntu. What has changed in Ubuntu to bring this about? [I can't get Min to work either.]
Windows 11 Insider Preview host, VB 7.1.0.

@andro,

Does VirtualBox produce a VBox.log for the failed installation, or does the Windows Event log indicate what happened when the failure occurred. At what stage does the installation fail? More information information is definitely needed before anyone could comment on what the problem might be; and, of course, the issue might also be connected to the Host being powered by a Windows Insider Build especially if updates activate Hyper-V or VBS (Virtualisation Based Security) features.

Have turned off Hyper-V - I am aware about that one.

It's true that this may be related to the Insider Preview. It's living on the edge, and possibly not a good idea.

I'll check the logs.

I still am very interested to know why the major distro Ubuntu is officially unsupported.

And @multiOS I am very grateful to you for pointing out in another thread that I had far too many CPU's configured for my system. Winding that down makes a big difference on the VMs that I can run, such as Debian 12.

andro,

Glad you've had some success apart, obviously, from the outstanding Ubuntu 24.04 issue.

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is now listed as a supported Host OS in the VirtualBox 7.1 User Manual and there is a specific VirtualBox installation package for Oracle 24.04 Host systems. 'Supported' Guests are generally listed as either 'Oracle Premier Support' or under a 'Limited/Other Support' category in the VirtualBox User Manual; and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Guests (which will also cover the many Ubuntu derivatives) are listed in that second category.

My acquired understanding (which could be wrong) is that the 'Premier Support' classification will understandably drive top priority attention towards those Host/Guest OS that earn Oracle a significant income through commercial support contracts, rather than simply by the volume of potential users of individual OS variants. That income stream will, presumably, contribute to whatever Oracle resources can be made available for the ongoing development and maintenance of VirtualBox; and support its continued availability as a "free to use" option. The Limited/Other Support category doesn't automatically mean 'low/no priority'' is given to the Debian/Ubuntu (or any other) family of distributions; but day-to-day priorities are bound to be focussed more on the causes and potential/real impacts of reported issues with the 'official' Oracle VirtualBox distribution(s) across all supported platforms.
