Re: The virtual machine has terminated unexpectedly during startup because of signal 5.
The first thing is that you are using an Ubuntu distribution of VirtualBox 6.1.50, not the 'official' Oracle release, That version was released by Oracle in January 2024 as a final maintenance update. It is now end-of-life and is no longer supported by Oracle; and is known not to be compatible with more recent Linux kernel updates.
You could roll-back to a supported kernel and wait for Ubuntu to get its act together; or take the better option of upgrading VirtualBox to the currently supported version. The latest version, as of July 2024, is 7.0.20 available direct from Oracle's own Download pages: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads and https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

Looks like this is specifically a Ubuntu issue because I'm running 7.0.20 and ran into this issue yesterday as well. Found this thread as a result.

Hey there,
having the same issue with following setup:
OS: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS x86_64
Kernel: 6.8.0-40-generic
Oracle VM VirtualBox VM Selector v7.0.20
I had the issue already before the upgrade with Ubuntu 23.10, but hoped it will disappear after the upgrade.
Also I found a workaround for me - I have an commercial on-access virus scanner running and when I stop this service, everything works fine (I informed the support).

Re: The virtual machine has terminated unexpectedly during startup because of signal 5.
Update: The issue was resolved by the virus scanner company and the vm's can be started without errors.

That's good to know; and something else to check for. We don't seem to see many questions/reports coming from Linux users who 'admit to' using Anti-virus/Security scanning software.
