Virtualbox host artifacts all doubled in size when I updated from 7.0.18 to 7.0.20d to

Post by tarkusnz »

With the caveat "so far as I am aware" I have made no relevant changes to my system (Dell XPS 15 running Win 11 Pro on two monitors) other than updating Virtualbox from 7.0.18 to 2.0.20.
I have a Fedora 39 guest which has the virtual box guest additions package installed and up to date.

After upgrading virtualbox I shut my PC down and rebooted. On launching Virtualbox I discovered that the virtualbox window had quadrupled in size and every text field and menu/button label is appearing in a large font.

When I start my Fedora VM the display of the Linux desktop is normally scaled, i.e. there is no change from before. But the guest window menu bar, dropdown menus, and the toolbar buttons at the foot of the screen are all double sized.

No other application on the PC has been resized, this change is specific to Virtualbox.

I can't find any option or preference in the Virtualbox menus to adjust this.

Can anybody explain what might have happened and point me to how to return to the former size? I can't believe that it's an intentional change with this release and there's nothing pertinent in the changelog.

Cheers & thanks

There was no such behavior change with 7.0.20, but VirtualBox offers a lot of application specific scaling options which you might have used unintentionally.
  1. In the menu in the VM window: View -> Virtual Screen 1 -> Scale to X%
  2. In the VM settings, Display -> Screen -> Scale Factor
  3. In the global properties, File -> Preferences -> Display -> Scale Factor (and Font Scaling)

Hehehe. . This "tip" helped me to fix my issue! Thank you very much
(My guest VM had a "wrong" screen size resolution!)

Thanks for your reply.

I should have mentioned in the first post that I have my Windows desktop extended across two 4K monitors, both scaled at 200% for readability. It appeared that this 200% was being applied twice.

My best guess is that I inadvertently pressed a control key combination that reset something although I still do not know what.

I set everything in virtualbox to default, changed the display settings in the guest to unscaled and 1920x1080, set my Windows display scaling to 100% and rebooted. At this point when I launched Virtualbox the window and text was consistent with my other applications, so one by one I reverted the Windows scaling, then set the scale factor in the VM display settings in virtualbox, started the VM and changed the View > Virtual Screen 1 settings to scale at 200%, and after this it looked like everything was back to its desired appearance - and remained so after a reboot.

So I think it's fixed now. Thanks.
