Instead of using DMG and ISO?

Thank you for reading and hopefully answering soon. :)

As far as I am aware the only way to install MacOS to an empty machine, either VM or real hardware, is to use the ISO (or for a real machine the ISO installed to an external drive).

A real machine can also install via internet recovery but that is not possible with a VM as the VM cannot identify itself to the Apple servers as a specific model.

Creating the ISO from a macOS Installer is well documented.

So, https://www.whatroute.net/installerapp2iso.html should work? VMware Fusion makes it so easy to clean install macOSes.

It might work but no guarantees. The underlying shell script was maintained by @socratis who passed away about 4 years ago and has had no maintenance since then.

The Apple documented method is at: https://support.apple.com/en-nz/101578

Nice to hear that VMware Fusion have made it easy. That of course is always an option for you.

Does VirtualBox support bootable USB drives? I don't see that option. Socratis passed away? Did I miss that death announcement? :(

Thanks. I rarely read the forum's changelogs. I usually read from web site like https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Changelog-6.1.
