Confirmed... something must have gone wrong with the repo updating. Selectively. I checked the publishing source and it's not there either, but bullseye has been updated. Probably won't be fixed before Monday.

FYI. https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Changelog-7.0#v18 has a date typo since it came out yesterday on the 3rd. ;)

There is a problem with saving the state of the VM. I'm on a Linux Mint host with 7.0.18 and a Windows 10 VM. The VM is never saved. The progress indicator sticks at 0% and does nothing. You have to kill the process to get out of it. Then the VM is corrupted and won't boot. You have to restore the VM from backup.

This is all there is in the log:

Code: Select all

00:07:31.150642 GUI: Request to close active machine-window.
00:07:31.617496 Changing the VM state from 'RUNNING' to 'SUSPENDING'
00:07:32.153316 PDMR3Suspend: 520 148 428 ns run time
00:07:32.153344 Changing the VM state from 'SUSPENDING' to 'SUSPENDED'
00:07:32.153526 Console: Machine state changed to 'Paused'
00:07:42.363685 GUI: Request for close-action to save VM state.
00:07:42.363710 GUI: Saving VM state..
00:07:42.441302 Console: Machine state changed to 'Saving'
00:07:42.463623 Changing the VM state from 'SUSPENDED' to 'SAVING'

I'm currently running VB 7.0.14 under Windows 10 Pro 22H2 build 19045.4291 (i.e. the April 2024 update).

VB 7.0.18 imposes some new requirements for the security settings of the directory where VB is installed *and all parent folders*. While the documentation (manual chapter 3.1.2) says what the security settings should be, it does not mention their implications. What are they?

Unfortunately, I've installed VirtualBox in a directory which is in a directory tree where I've installed many other non-Microsoft software products. Without knowing the implications of the security changes, I am *extremely* reluctant to make the required changes to the shared parent directory.

Same. I gave up and installed into my C:\Program Files\VirtualBox v7.0.18andup\. :(

We didn't raise the bar "just because". The directory permissions are actually exactly those used by C:\Program Files by default. The point is to protect the VirtualBox install against tampering by malware running with normal user privileges.

Other software should have no problem with those directory permissions, because within the other directories the permissions are exactly as before.

I don't have a problem with protecting VB. It's just that I need to understand the implications of changing the protections of the *upper-level* directories so I can evaluate the effects on the directories of and access to other software. Some of those other packages are designed with the assumption that the current user has full access to them and are unusable if installed in C:\Program Files.

The 7.0.18 Linux "all distributions" .run package is missing a Guest Additions .iso image.

I've reverted to 7.0.16 on Ubuntu Studio 24.04 from the all distributions package, which is complete.

Hi okcrum,

What makes you think that? Guest Additions .iso is in place /opt/VirtualBox/additions/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso.

After a fresh installation of Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble Numbat). The latest VirtualBox 7.0.18 will not run without signed kernel modules.

1. Reboot into BIOS and disable secureboot (not recommended for security reasons)
2. Install pre-requisites and dependencies

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y
sudo apt-get install dkms libsdl-ttf2.0-0 build-essential dpkg-dev gcc -y

3. Run sudo apt-get install virtualbox (FYI. Installs version 7.0.16 instead of 7.0.18 as of 5/8/24 from apt-get)
4. virtualbox (application launches and VM's can load and launch
5. sudo init 0 and reboot the machine into BIOS and re-enable SecureBoot and log back in.
6. Launch a VM and it throws this error:

The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver is either not loaded or not set up correctly. Please reinstall virtualbox-dkms package and load the kernel module by executing

'modprobe vboxdrv'
as root.

If your system has EFI Secure Boot enabled you may also need to sign the kernel modules (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt, vboxnetadp, vboxpci) before you can load them. Please see your Linux system's documentation for more information.

where: suplibOsInit what: 3 VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (-1908) - The support driver is not installed. On linux, open returned ENOENT.

7. Marathon of attempts to reinstall virtualbox-dkms (already installed). Attempts to sign keys with mokutil ssl.
8. I got zilch...anyone else that can help? AI and Google just is not cutting it on this one...

Missing dependencies after running: sudo apt install ./virtualbox* (latest version)
sudo apt-get install libsdl-ttf2.0-0
and it's whining about libvpx7 (Ubuntu 24.04 LTS) comes with libvpx9

also attempted to reload everything:

sudo -i (I know...I know...yadda yadda) I ran as root (just tired of the problem)

dpkg-reconfigure virtualbox-dkms
dpkg-reconfigure virtualbox
modprobe vboxdrv

Error persists: modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'vboxdrv': Key was rejected by service

clean and fresh install of 7.0.18 and associated errors on Ubuntu 24.04 (5/8/24) from the terminal:
