Guest seems to be unresponsive

Post by Michele31415 »

Running VB Version 7.0.14 r161095 (Qt5.15.2) on a Windows 11 host with all updates applied. I start a Ubuntu guest and all is well until at some random point, usually a few hours, the guest suddenly just stops responding. I can move the mouse around but button clicks and keyboard actions have no effect. The tail of the log:

So far I have disabled HyperV on the host and disabled nested paging in the guest's settings. Didn't help. I searched the forum for this topic and found nothing. What's going on here?

Please start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.

Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show in Explorer/Finder/File Manager. In the "Logs" subfolder, zip the VM's "vbox.log", and post the zip file, using the forum's Attachments tab. (Configure your host OS to show all extensions so you can find the "vbox.log", not "vbox.log.1", etc.)

No, it's not possible. The VM is totally unresponsive so there's no way to shut it down normally. How do I "close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set"? Do you mean Machine -> ACPI Shutdown? I don't see a Power Off option.

When you click the X box on the VM window through the usual method for closing windows in Windows, you get a pop-up box asking for a few options. One of the options will be "Power Off".

FWIW, I'm getting the same problem with my Win XP guest, so it's not just Ubuntu:

Like the Ubuntu guest, I can move the mouse around, but mouse clicks and keyboard input do nothing. It's pretty mysterious.

FWIW Hyper-V on the host is still enabled:
00:00:02.759860 HM: HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM: VT-x is not available
See HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM (Hyper-V is active).

Active host Hyper-V is gradually becoming not as much of a problem, but it does still interfere at times.

One other thing, you "Core(TM) i7-12700K" processor has those performance & efficiency cores, and if Virtualbox gets put on the efficiency cores, performance could drop. See viewtopic.php?f=6&t=108745 for possibilities.

Thank you for some good suggestions. I didn't even know about p-cores and e-cores. I thought I'd disabled Hyper-V by unchecking it in the Windows features box. Meanwhile I tried the power-throtlling commands.

Code: Select all

C:\Program Files\qemu>powercfg /powerthrottling disable /path "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxHeadless.exe"

C:\Program Files\qemu>powercfg /powerthrottling disable /path "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VirtualBoxVM.exe"
I have both my Ubuntu an XP VM's running now. We'll see what happens.

Update

I don't know if this can be considered a solution or a workaround but I got my VM's to stay running just by disabling acceleration entirely (Settings -> System -> Acceleration -> Paravirtualization Interface: None) and unchecking Enable 3d Acceleration under Display. My Ubuntu guest has now been up for nine days, whereas it always locked up somewhere between a few hours to less than two days before. My XP VM has been up for over four days with no problems too.

And honestly, I don't notice any difference in speed or responsiveness of the UI. Admittedly I'm not mining bitcoins or cracking wifi passwords but it's good enough for me.
