VirtualBox guest additions update download reaches 100%, nothing happens

I get a notification to upgrade GE, but the notification box is too small/text unwrapped to read the advice, so I click upgrade GE from the menu instead. In the right hand sidebar that opens, it immediately downloads to 100% but does nothing further.

I'm not sure what "Unknown reason" pertains to - presumably some error which is halting the process.

Any ideas what might be causing this and what I can do to address it? IIRC my GE version is 6.9something and it wants to upgrade to 7.something, feasibly in line with the main VB version. Thanks in advance!

Similar to the linked topic, you're using the Ubuntu fork of Virtualbox:

The "_Ubuntu" gives it away.

This means Ubuntu needs to determine why it's failing. We only handle Official Virtualbox from www.virtualbox.org here, which comes with Guest Additions already bundled and not needing a separate download.

FWIW you can get the 7.0.12 Guest Additions downloaded directly from https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/ then attach it to the VM's Optical Drive and run the installer inside the VM OS's CD drive.
