Tiger on Catalina

Post by VVince »

Hi,

Many attempts to get Tiger on Catalina have been fruitless, I reach out for any advice on the matter.
This is my best attempt so far, the log, vbox is 7.
Would another guest mac os X be easier ? I tried 10.6 and 10.8 without any success.

I have never managed to get Tiger to run in VirtualBox (although others may have succeeded).

However, it is possible to get Leopard through to Monterey set up and running. There are a few hoops you have to jump through (depending on the OS version) but these have been well covered (albeit several years ago) in this forum. A bit of searching should turn up the relevant threads.

Also, you are running VirtualBox 7.0.14 on macOS Catalina. This is known to be a bad combination and you will be better off to uninstall 7.0.14, then download and install VirtualBox 6.1.50 from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Download_Old_Builds_6_1

Thanks, I did look this up and observe different advices I found here, with no avail. At least you give me a direction I can go.

.. just tried to install Tiger on Ventura with VB 7.0.12.
It works (as in previous OS versions/hosts/VB versions) with the following hints:

New machine
Name: Tiger2024
ISO image: Disk1of2 of the original grey DVDs
Type: Mac OS X
Version: Mac OS X (32-bit)
RAM: 2GB
CPU: 1
EFI: yes
Harddisk: 20GB

VBoxManage modifyvm Tiger2024 --cpu-profile "Intel Xeon X5482 3.20GHz"
VBoxManage setextradata Tiger2024 VBoxInternal/Devices/efi/0/Config/DmiSystemProduct MacBookPro3,1
VBoxManage setextradata Tiger2024 VBoxInternal2/EfiGraphicsResolution 1920x1080

… start the VM ..

Virtual screen —> scale to 200%

Use English as the main language
Utilities/Disk Utility: Erase the 20 GB disk with default options - quit disk utility

Customize: deselect all options (just to speed up :-)

Continue with installation

..remove the installation disk before the system reboots …

@VVince
I finally managed to get Tiger running.

I had to change the disk controller from SATA to IDE using the ICH6 chipset.
Other than that, the settings used by @okiuss are good on my iMac.
