I have installed Win 7 Home Premium (from retail DVDs) as a guest OS successfully. Applications I wish to use in Win7 run as expected. Attempts to get updates through the Win7 Control Panel system update function fail with an unknown error. Where else can I download updates - either using a web browser in Win7 or a browser in my host OS?
Host Os: MX Linux 23.1, Kernel 6.2
VirtualBox Version: 7.0.10 Debian r158739, Qt 5.15.8
Win 7 version : Home Premium 08-11-2012

If your VM OS can ping the internet (for example ping 8.8.8.8, Google's DNS server) then the VM OS has internet, and Virtualbox is going as far as it can go. Whatever problems in updating communication after that is between the OS and the update server.
WSUS Offline https://download.wsusoffline.net/ can download updates directly, instead of through the "Windows Update" OS feature. Version 11.9 apparently is the last that supports Windows 7. You can also get the Server 2008 R2 update for SHA256 security signing, which seems important for 7 also.

Thanks for this. I downloaded Version 11.83 (wsusoffline1183.zip) but I don't know how to handle the contents (many folders) other than running the included 'updategenerator.exe'. Is this correct?scottgus1 wrote: ↑11. The MS WSUS site tells me that the requirements for using the off-line files is a server version of Windows (2012, 2016 or 2019). I have only the Home Premium Edition of Win 7, so are these update files going to be installable ?

Yes. You can also look on the WSUS Offline website for instructions on how to use WSUS Offline.LateJunction wrote: ↑27. Jan 2024, 11:37 running the included 'updategenerator.exe'. Is this correct?
I've used WSUS Offline on Windows 7 Pro. All you have to do is try it.LateJunction wrote: ↑27. Jan 2024, 11:37 I have only the Home Premium Edition of Win 7, so are these update files going to be installable ?

You may also want to try Legacy Update - https://legacyupdate.net/
It's a community project to recreate Windows Update on Operating Systems no longer supported by Microsoft.
It's mainly targeted at 2K and XP users but supports Vista and Win7 as well.
