USB 3 missing driver in WinXP

Post by Tracey »

Virtualbox recognizes USB 3, but Windows XP does not.
When I start the WinXP guest, it recognizes the USB 3 hardware is there, but it prompts to install the driver.
When I browse to the location (see below) it states the software is not there.
Print screens attached.
Steps to enable USB3 in VirtualBox.7z
(101.38 KiB) Downloaded 98 times
Please advise.
Thanks, Tracey
(from USB 3.0 support in XP guests - virtualbox)
----------------------------------------
My environment:
Host: Win7 Home Premium SP1
VirtualBox 5.2.44
Guest: WinXP Pro 2002 SP3 32bit
----------------------------------------
Procedure: 0 virtualbox 5.2.44 Install extension pack
Download file Chipset_Driver_GVT5M_WN_3.0.23.0_A00.EXE from https://www.dell.com/support/home/en/en ... erid=gvt5m
Select USB-3.0-Controller (xHCI) in your VM USB configuration
Start Guest Windows Xp
Run the downloaded file and choose unzipping
Klick the button to open the folder with the unzipped files (...\Dell\drivers\Chipset_Driver_GVT5M_WN_3.0.23.0_A00)
Run RENESAS-USB3-Host-Driver-30230-setup.exe to install the driver-:-install location: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Dell\drivers\Chipset_Driver_GVT5M_WN_3.0.23.0_A00
Shut down the Guest
Open a DOS box and insert
"<YourDriveLetter>:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxManage.exe" setextradata NameOfVM VBoxInternal/Devices/usb-xhci/0/Config/ChipType uPD720201-:-"D:\Progra~1\Oracle\VirtualBox\VirtualBoxVM.exe" setextradata WinXP3.USB3 VBoxInternal/Devices/usb-xhci/0/Config/ChipType uPD720201

If the VM name contains blanks, use quotation-marks ("Name of VM"). Type Enter. Nothing seems to happen (no news is good news).

Command line to remove the extra data is the same as the one to set it, except the final part uPD720201, which must be omitted.
Start the Guest and plug in a USB device. If necessary, visit the VM configuration and add a USB device filter.

Thanks for the info, Tracey! This is also in our forum tutorial USB basics and troubleshooting post 6, which leads to a more specific tutorial about XP & USB 3.
