display problem (stripes) on freshly installed Ubuntu

Post by macsek »

Hi,

freshly installed VirtualBox 7.0.14 r161095 (Qt5.15.2) and VirtualBox 7.0.14 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack running on Win11, the only VM created is an Ubuntu 22.04 LTS 64 bits. Ubuntu was installed from the official (just downloaded) iso automatically by VirtualBox. (I like this feature 8) ) Nothing is modified at all, no additional program is installed.
The windows screen is working well, however the ubuntu VM window (and only that) shows stripes, like on an old monitor. I suspected the VirtualBox video driver (VMSVGA) and tried to change it to VBoxSVGA and VBoxVGA but setting either resulted me not able to log in so I reverted. I restarted more times, reinstalled Guest Additions two times, no change.

Please advise.

I'd suggest to create a ticket in the Bugtracker.

Thanks, I will do.
I wanted to test a daily development build but its version (Windows development revision 161032) is behind the version I installed (7.0.14 r161095) :o

As you've already noticed, as of now there aren't any VirtualBox test builds and VirtualBox development snapshots available that are newer than the current VirtualBox release updates. They're only created from time to time when the VirtualBox developers want feedback on current changes.

Regarding the ticket and forum thread you mentioned, they both share the "problematic" property in that they perhaps mix different issues that were partially addressed between VirtualBox 7.0.12 and 7.0.14:

1. The Ubuntu kernel update to 6.5+ kernels needs both VirtualBox 7.0.14 and gcc 12. While updating VirtualBox is a rather obvious step, having to update gcc yourself is not so obvious.

2. Graphics issues in VirtualBox 7.0 have been an area of constant improvement during the VirtualBox 7.0.x release updates. Reporting them against VirtualBox 7.0.12 doesn't make much sense any more since VirtualBox 7.0.14 is out.

In consequence, we have to ensure that all issues are reproduced with VirtualBox 7.0.14, to sort out issues that already have been fixed. I'm convinced that there are graphical issues with VirtualBox 7.0.14, though, like the one you've reported.
