Cannot create Sonoma guest on 2020 MacBook Pro running macOS 14.2.1 (Sonoma) and VirtualBox 7.0.12

Post by RicHoward »

I have been unable to successfully install macOS Ventura or Sonoma in a macOS VM on my 2020 MacBook Pro previously running macOS Monterrey and now running macOS Sonoma when using VirtualBox 7.0.12. The behavior in all 4 cases was essentially the same: After about an hour of installation which appears to be going ok, the boot messages start showing "reboot after panic" messages (about 6 times) followed by a boot failure graphic following by the Recovery OS screen.

The VM's were all created with 4096 MB base memory, ICH9 chipset type, EFI enabled, 128 GB vdi drive, and xHCI USB.

With Sonoma running on the host, I have been able to create and install a macOS Monterrey VM, just not Ventura nor Sonoma.

The ISO files for all the installs were created by me from the appropriate app file (e.g. "/Applications/Install macOS Sonoma.app") downloaded from the App Store.

Here is a rough timeline of the attempt to install Sonoma in a macOS VM (log file attached and extension pack info at bottom of post):
10:04 Create VM, attach iso file, start
10:05 Use Disk Utility to erase the VM's HARDDISK
10:07 Select Install macOS Sonoma. Message says about 18 minutes remaining
10:22 Boot messages start appearing
10:23 Message says about 29 minutes remaining
10:54 Message says less then 1 minute remaining
11:05 Message still says less then 1 minute remaining
11:06 Boot messages start appearing
11:14 Apple Logo appears with a progress bar
11:15 Boot messages start appearing
11:17 Reboot after Panic message appears followed shortly by more boot messages (this repeats about 6 times)
11:19 Boot failure graphic displayed for 10 seconds
11:19 Another Reboot after Panic message
11:20 macOS Recovery screen comes up
11:21 I click the shutdown option

Has anyone been able to create and install Ventura or Sonoma VM's on a 2020ish MacBook Pro using VB 7.0.12? What settings did you use?

Thanks,
Ric

Sorry to confirm, but I have also been unable to get past Monterey. I don't know of any workaround.

Thanks for confirming granada29.

I looked through the bug tracker and found this is already reported as ticket #21542.
