Unable to install CentOS

Post by Panic »

When attempting to start the installation of CentOS 7.9, an error occurs.

My laptop model: ACER SFG14-42-R16Z
- Host OS: Windows 11
- Virtualbox version: 6.1.48 r159471 (Qt5.6.2)

Already attempted:

1. Configuration - System - Processor, changed the processor core 1-> 2
2. Checked virtualization options in BIOS settings(AMD svm)
3. Disabled Core Isolation feature in Win11

The installation ISO image is a valid file, and errors also occur when trying to install Oracle Linux and Kali Linux.

Can I get some help?

What error occurs? I see nothing reported in the VM log so I assume it was not a VM error.

The only mistake that jumps out right now is that you haven't provided enough graphics RAM. Increase from the current 16MB to 128MB.

This is the error image appearing on the screen during the installation attempt.

Even after increasing the graphics RAM to 128MB, the same error persists.

Please try if the following workaround helps:

While the VM is not running, open a Windows Command Prompt with normal user privileges and enter the following commands:

Code: Select all

cd "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox"
VBoxManage setextradata "VM name" "VBoxInternal/CPUM/HostCPUID/80000006/edx" "0x00009040"
Please tell us if the workaround helped or not. To remove the workaround, you can use

Code: Select all

cd "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox"
VBoxManage setextradata "VM name" "VBoxInternal/CPUM/HostCPUID/80000006/edx"
PS: Don't forget to replace the VM name. ;)

I truly appreciate your kind response!
Thanks to your guidance, the issue has been resolved.
Even after updating Virtualbox to version 7.0.12 r159484, the method you provided works well.

Is the cause of the error possibly that my laptop's CPU model is not supported in the Guest OS? May I inquire if the resolution commands you provided are meant for registering my laptop's CPU model in the Guest OS?

I am grateful for your response.

Well, sort of! The AMD 7840|7940 CPUs provide the information about their L3 cache in new CPUID leaves, and the current VirtualBox versions 6.1.48 and 7.0.12 do not support that yet. The issue has been fixed in the VirtualBox 7.0.97 development snapshots, but not yet in the VirtualBox test builds 6.1.49 and 7.0.13 (as of 2023-12-01).

This is also the reason why I didn't suggest any test builds, but provided a workaround that simulates the result of the upcoming VirtualBox enhancement. Note that my workaround used a different value (0x00009040) than the suggestions of other forum users (0x02009140 and 0x00009000), and so your feedback helped to verify the upcoming VirtualBox enhancement. ;)
