virtualbox 6.1.48 vs 7.1.12
virtualbox 6.1.48 vs 7.1.12
Actually my question is: Why are there 2 different releases of virtualbox? I've aways used 7.1.x and was wondering what the 6.1.x versions were used for? There must be a reason for 2 verision, right ?

Why do software vendors ever provide two branches? The 6.1.48 release is the long term support version, for those who prefer stability over new features. The 6.1.x branch mainly gets bugfixes now.
I find it ironic that someone who embeds the word "Manjaro" in their handle would ask why we need multiple versions of any piece of software! Though possibly I'm incorrect in assuming that it's a reference to the Linux distro variant?

Not to dogpile, but there's a couple data points to consider:
B: Your first post reported using 6.1.22. So not "always".
And like Mpack says, 6.1 is like Ubuntu's LTS. A stable channel for those who need existing things to work well instead of testing the new version and risking a breakage (of which there are always a few in a new major version).
A: 7.1 doesn't exist yet. We're on 7.0.12 at this moment.
B: Your first post reported using 6.1.22. So not "always".

Manjaro distro is my "go to OS" IE my host OS. So needing a unique ID and one I could remember.......mpack wrote: ↑19. Oct 2023, 10:55 Why do software vendors ever provide two branches? Thanks to all that contributed regarding LTS vs Rolling Releases. I like to play around with the latest distro's and I have enough memory and storage to run multiple vbox clients so LTS is not necessary. (Easily restored if things go awry. )
