on a Windows 11 platform and want to use file manager to copy files to the guest from the host but do not know the username and password for file manager ... how does one go about finding out the username and password to use file manager?

VirtualBox has no way of knowing guest OS passwords, just like it doesn't know the password for your host PC. They are your PCs, you have to know these things.

One thing: when you installed XP you will have created a default user and password - or not, because XP allows a blank password. Note however that I believe it's the case that while XP allows a blank password for the local user, the guestcontrol feature does not. This would be in keeping with e.g. remote access to the XP installation, which requires a non-blank password.

So boot up the guest in the normal way and make sure that you know the name and non-blank password of the account you intend to use.

In addition to what mpack wrote:

If you used the VirtualBox Unattended Install method, which is the default since VirtualBox 7.0, and if you didn't change the default user credentials, the username would be "vboxuser" and the password would be "changeme".
