VirtualBox detects wrong CPU type

Post by planet36 »

I'm using VirtualBox 7.0.10 on a new Dell laptop (Windows 10 Pro, Intel Core i9 13950HX). The guest OS is Arch Linux.

In the VM I wanted to use the SHA instructions, but that flag wasn't in "/proc/cpuinfo".
From the VBox.log, VirtualBox finds that the processor matches "Intel_Atom_Unknown". That doesn't seem right.

The VM runs fine otherwise. Is there a setting I should change to affect the detection of CPU type?

Here's part of the VBox.log
00:00:04.121434 CPUM: Matched host CPU INTEL 0x6/0xb7/0x1 Intel_Atom_Unknown with CPU DB entry 'Intel Pentium N3530 2.16GHz' (INTEL 0x6/0x37/0x8 Intel_Atom_Silvermont)
A complete compressed log is attached.

Yes, that isn't correct, and you can create a ticket in the Bugtracker if you like to. But most CPU capabilities are taken from the physical host CPU and do not depend on the CPU DB match. Especially it's not the cause of your following issue:

VirtualBox doesn't provide the CPU capability SHA to its VMs, since this hasn't been implemented yet, and I don't know about any plans of doing that. You could create an enhancement request in the Bugtracker.

Support for the SHA instructions was implemented after 7.0 and should be available in the develompment snapshots.

FYI: You can find the development snapshots on the VirtualBox test builds webpage.
