After upgrading to 7.0.6, VB slowed to the extent that I was unable to get to the point where a Windows Guest VM would offer me the chance to log in (I left VB running for several hours). I then downgraded to 6.1.44, and all is well. I have not tried 7.0.8.
Anybody else able to get VB 7 running on Catalina?
TIA,
Mark

Re: 7.0.6 freezes on Catalina 10.15.7
This was exactly my experience with VirtualBox 7.0.x on a Catalina host.
The Apple hypervisor installed in Catalina is no longer supported by Apple, along with rest of Catalina, but it is a requirement for VirtualBox 7.0.x
I think that you made a wise decision to go back to 6.1.44. It runs very well on my 2012 Mac Mini. That hardware is probably not powerful enough to run Apples hypervisor, even if I were to use OCLP to install Big Sur or later.
I'm not sure for how much longer the VirtualBox 6.1.x software will be updated by Oracle, but for now it is running well with weeks/months between restarts of the VMs.

Official statement from Download VirtualBox: "Version 6.1 will remain supported until December 2023."
Re: 7.0.6 freezes on Catalina 10.15.7
confirming.
7.0.8 on latest catalina is fundamentally broken.
it would be nice if it just broke completely and would not run, but instead it tries to run but the VMs bog down, never boot, and just wont work.
thanks oracle :{
wish i looked for this thread 2 hrs ago.
stick with 6.1 series - then we probably need to move to supported mac os or move to UTM.

Well of course it is, and the reason is already given. VirtualBox 7.x runs under the Apple Hypervisor. You don't have a working Apple Hypervisor in Catalina.
That said, it's fair to ask why Catalina is listed as a supported host in the user manual, since it obviously can't be supported. I assume it's an oversight.

Lucky for you it only took 2 hrs. This whole virtualization journey is new to me and I elected to go with VirtualBox after mildly considering a "paid" route (VMWare).moly99 wrote: ↑17. Jun 2023, 22:52 confirming.

I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro that's also running Catalina 10.15.7 and after almost two whole MONTHS of trying, I finally stumbled (got clear headed) across this forum only to now confirm why I've been having all these issues.
I've been trying to install 6.1.44-158378 (2023.07.18 release) AND 6.1.44-156814 (2023.04.18 release), but both failed and said to contact software developer.
Can you guys let me know which version of 6.1.44 worked for you on Catalina 10.15.7 please?
