Guru Meditation critical error

Post by Bushido »

Hi!

After enabling USB 3.0 from the USB settings of virtual machine, Windows 10 home 64-bit introduced me a Welcome screen after the log-in. The welcome screen is about joining some Microsoft service/product as a requirement if I want to keep using Windows after 3 days. I clicked "Next" and during the loading of Welcome screen, Virtualbox introduced me the attachment.
Log file: https://www.upload.ee/files/14683175/VBox.log.html.

Why did it appear and how to solve?

Is the CPU really a "AMD A4-4300M APU"?

Spec:

Trying to run Windows 10 on one core would not be my favorite thing to do.

But a triple fault exception is usually, IME, caused by corrupted media.

Final note: we only support official builds of VirtualBox on these forums. Users of third party builds (you are using the Ubuntu repo build) should go to that third party for support. Or install the official version.

Yes. "AMD® A4-4300m apu with radeon(tm) hd graphics × 2". "x 2" hints that I have two CPUs?

By "on one core" means with 1 CPU? My system specification has "x 2" for CPU.

You hint that USB modem caused it although Windows did not recognize it?

I did not know that I am not using official build. I guess that I downloaded it from the Ubuntu Software or Flatpak store or from VirtualBox official page. How can I detect which third party it is?

In this case "third party" means the Linux distro itself. https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads is where official Virtualbox can be found. The vbox.log 'rats out' the 3rd-party source:
00:00:03.804986 VirtualBox VM 6.1.38_Ubuntu r153438 linux.amd64 (Sep 7 2022 11:18:57) release log
That '_DistroName' isn't there in official Virtualbox.

Not to say that distro forks are worthless or that all problems under a distro's fork are from the fork, but we don't know what the distros changed, so we don;t know if the changes are the cause of the problem. Thus we may suggest using official Virtualbox to get help here, or you can ask the distro for help with its fork.

True, but only 1 in the VM, which is bad for Windows 10:
Host CPU status:
00:00:04.357660 CPUM: Logical host processors: 2 present, 2 max, 2 online, online mask: 0000000000000003
00:00:04.357828 CPUM: Physical host cores: 2
00:00:04.359244 Full Name: "AMD A4-4300M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics "
00:00:04.359045 NX - No-Execute/Execute-Disable = 1 (1)
00:00:04.062440 EnableNestedPaging <integer> = 0x0000000000000001 (1)
Guest CPU settings:
00:00:04.061951 NumCPUs <integer> = 0x0000000000000001 (1)
This host's CPU will really struggle to run 10 in a VM.

Is the official Virtualbox better than distro's fork? Is it safe to just install official or firstly I must uninstall fork?

Can I enable 2 CPUs for VM?

They are usually very similar, but some files are installed in different places. You should uninstall any installed VirtualBox version before installing the other one, and you should reboot the host in between or afterwards, before using VirtualBox.

I'd suggest to provide 2 vCPUs to the VM.

I think I managed to provide 1 additional vCPU to the VM. A faster user experience proves it. Everything works faster.

This triple fault exception occurred only once. Is it normal and I do not have to worry about the loss of virtualised Windows data?

Does the uninstall of any installed VirtualBox version will also uninstall settings/virtualised operating systems?

Always worry about loss of important data. Backups are a ubiquitous part of computing.

Triple faults in an otherwise working VM aren't normal. Without further data or a repeating sequence leading to a triple fault, it could be anyone's guess as to why it happened or will it happen again.
Bushido wrote:Does the uninstall of any installed VirtualBox version will also uninstall settings/virtualised operating systems?
See the above about backups.

VMs and settings survive a Virtualbox version change. If they didn't, upgrades would be a tad difficult.
