VirtualBox completely hangs Vista host system
I just bought Asus notebook with pre-installed Vista Home Premium.
I successfully installed and used Win XP guest system for some time. However, when trying to install Ubuntu or OpenSolaris, Vista host gets completely hanged, not responding to any key or mouse combination.
Host hangs during first few seconds of Ubuntu guest installation procedure, and very soon after start of OpenSolaris installation procedure. Installation boot loader menu seems to be working on both guests, until I choose to install the sys. Also, if I choose to boot Ubuntu as live CD, system hangs also. When I choose "Check CD for defects" from Ubuntu boot loader menu, system hags also (!), although the ISO images are accessible, and their MD5 checksums are OK, just as WinXP installation ISO.
I need your help to resolve this issue, since I really need these systems as guests for my studies. I love VirtualBox and really do not want to switch to vmware, unless this issue will force me to.
If you need any additional info, please say.

There are some stability issues with 2.1 which cause Vista to hang. Downgrade to 2.0.6.

You can try forcing the Virtual Machines to the lowest priority. This may or may not help, depending on what's actually freezing the system.
Start VirtualBox and open Task Manager before starting any VMs. Go to the process tab and find the VBoxSvc.exe process and right click it, click Priority, and click idle. Now, until you completely exit out of VBox, all newly-run Virtual Machines will always defer to other apps and the system when they have CPU cycles to grind. Your VMs will run a bit slower when other apps are working but the other apps will be much more responsive.
To adjust the priority of other VMs, you can use an app like PowerMenu (Google for it) which allows you to right click a window and adjust the priority of the process that owns the window. Or you can use Task Manager replacements that show processes in a tree format, like System Explorer or Process Explorer, so you can easily identify the VirtualBox.exe processes that are VMs (and not the main VirtualBox window).

Thanks for response!
It seemed like a good idea to me, however in didn't work. =( There is no "Idle" process priority in Vista, "Low" is the lowest one. I ensured that all virtualbox related processes are running with lowest possible priority, but host still freezed completely. It seems to be some major system fault, not resource starvation issue. It is a blocker for using virtualbox. Software is not functioning. =((

Hi,
I have the same problem on XP.
For me, the resolv is to change the network type.
Virtualbox use a virtual network card and use it with NAT.
try to change the network type, and select Host Interface Networking, and not NAT.
Then select your own network card on your laptop, and then launch an install of linux.
Sorry for my english, i'm french

Hi,
It didn't work for me. =(
Among adapter types in my virtualbox I have
- PCnet-PCI II (Am79C970A)
- PCnet-FAST III (Am79C973)
- Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM)
- Intel PRO/1000 T Server (82543GC)
Among "Attached to" options I have:
- Not attached
- NAT
- Host Interface
- Internal Network
Among Host Interfaces I have my cable card and my wireless card.
What combination you use to avoid getting your host OS frozen?
Following your advice, I've tried most of possible combination of Adapter types and network types. Vista still frozen. As I mentioned, I even disabled my network interfaces (both wireless and cable) in vista device manager, but VB still hanged my system. The result was the same when I disabled networking for my guest system completely.

2) after a while mouse begins to freeze every 10 or 15 seconds for 2 or 3 seconds each time.
3) If you try to close the VM windows nothing happens.
4) If you try to kill the virtualbox process from the task manager nothing happens.
5) Mouse still moves but,

6) The only solution is to press the power button.
7) XP VM works with no problem.
