Latest update broke shared folders

Post by Vadi »

Hello,

It seems the 1.5.0 update broke my shared folder, Windows couldn't access it. I've uninstalled and installed the guest additions, so now it says I have 1.5.0 running. Then I've deleted, rebooted windows, added the same folder again. In the manual it says that you should be able to see it under "My Network Places" now - but I didn't, so I tried the alternative and old way of net use. But that gives me an error 53.

Here's a screenshot, if it helps: http://compizf.googlepages.com/Screenshot.png.

Any ideas what did I do wrong?

I tried doing the 'Add Network Place' in windows, typed in \\vboxsvr\SharedFolder, but still, it's not seeing it.

it works without any problem for me, but I also can't see it in my network places...

I had added it as drive which reconnects automatically and not touched it after the update...

I may try to add another/new folder and see...

(btw: your image link is broken...)

I have the same Problem on a Vista Guest.

XP Home and Professional works without Problems.

Host ist Suse Linux 10.2/64.

With 1.40 also Vista works (with known Problems from Ticket 57).

See later.

hm I booted Win XP Pro SP2 some minutes ago and it is broken now...

I am 100% positive that I could access the shared folder yesterday as I transfered some Windows Patches over it... nothing changed since then (same vbox-version; settings) , but now I am unable to reconnect the share. Also a new share don't work.
As this wouldn't be strange enough my Windows 2k machine simply removes the share... I also be sure that it worked yesterday (I have done all the windows/office updates and updated the additions yesterday...)

EDIT: same behavior on both a windows and a linux host with these machines...

Vbox was updated to 1.5.0 from 1.4.0 today. I'm pretty sure that's the cause of it :(

Oh, yeah,,, I have problem with shared folders, too.

SharedFolders work fine right after the booting of guest OS on Vbox 1.5.0 with WinVista host and WinXPSP2 guest. They appear under MyComputer as network drive and under MyNetwork as shared folder at the same time. Minutes later, the explorer which shows shared folders hangs. "Not Responding" is shown on the title bar of the explorer. Task manager also says so.

Funny thing is, the "frozen" explorer comes back and starts working when it is kicked by another explorer. Here's how it goes. When it goes hangup, kick MyDocument to open another explorer. Just make a single click on the shared folders in new explorer, then "frozen" explorer is brought to life and works fine.

I hope to get bugs corrected soon.

Check if vboxsf.sys and vboxmrxnp.dll in \windows\system32 & \windows\system32\drivers are the same as those found on the additions iso (driver\vboxsf)

Same on my second Host, Suse 10.2/32. No Shared Folders with Vista, XP works.

Samba Network Share on both Hosts works with Vista.

Message from net use command is the standard "systemerror 67: Name not found".

I have all the same problems are here posted.
I'm using Debian etch as host and Windows XP as guest.
If I reinstall the guest addons and reboot then the shared folders are working one time until the next reboot. Then I have to reinstall the guest addons and boot and ...
it's unusable.

try opening "My network places" via rightclick -> "Explore"

that should open the vbox shared folder

I hope you understand what I mean :wink:

it's somewhat buggy but at least I have access to the files

copying to shared files however doesn't always work and only a reboot help (by the guest)

opening files from the shared folder out of windows apps currently seems to be completely broken -

in windows 2000 it seems to be less broken than in windows xp - however

Copying shared files work (if I have just reinstalled the guest addons) but trying to open them (with notepad or any other application) ends up in seriours error messages like "wrong parameter" or "already use" (wrong).

Sander, Thanks for your comment.

Those two files in windows folder and iso image proved identical in size and timestamp.

it doesn't make any sense, but

remove shared dir from win guest ->
remove guest tools ->
reboot guest ->
install guest tools ->
reboot guest ->
add shared dir

worked for me...
