Windows guest not starting up

Post by eastway »

I have an Ubuntu 20.04 Virtualbox host.

I built an Windows guest VM successfully so that another user runs this. I have made that user account the owner of that particular directory. When I run the VM, it displays this error attached.

Can anyone work out why the attached is displayed?

According tou your information, this was working:
eastway wrote:I built an Windows guest VM successfully so that another user runs this.
then you did this:
eastway wrote:I have made that user account the owner of that particular directory.
then the error appeared. So if you undo the permissions change, does the VM start running again?

Curiously a web-search on

"Linux Hosts" NS_ERROR_FAILURE "exit code 1" site:forums.virtualbox.org

shows one of the results here viewtopic.php?f=7&t=96377#p469342 which says that permissions changes can cause this problem.

Didn't actually check, a colleague of mine noticed change of owner and group in /etc, /opt and /usr which caused the issue.
