Virtual Box cannot be started (VirtualBox-6.1.28-147628-Win.exe)

Post by JBR »

Hello,

When starting the application, an error message window appears:

The VirtualBox COM object was not received successfully.
The application will now be terminated.

Cannot register the DVD image 'C:\Users\user.name\VirtualBox VMs\JBRVM\JBRVM-disk002.iso' {ae4ab52f-6409-4807-ba98-06329b18966c} because a CD/DVD image 'C:\Users\user.name\VirtualBox VMs\JBRVM\JBRVM-disk002.iso' with UUID {4f454f9d-0ef6-4786-8d49-fb6e0c9954c6} already exists.

Result code (RC): E_INVALIDARG (0x80070057)
Component: VirtualBoxWrap
Interfaces: IVirtualBox {d0a0163f-e254-4e5b-a1f2-011cf991c38d}
Function called: IVirtualBoxClient {d2937a8e-cb8d-4382-90ba-b7da78a74573}

  • I have deleted all the files in the c:\Users\user.name\VirtualBox VMs\
  • I reinstalled the application several times (also using the "Repair" function).
I still can't launch the application - can I ask for help in solving the problem?

Regards,
Jacek

I suspect that you somehow managed to create a VM with two DVD drives, and with the same DVD ISO mounted in both of them.

Zip up the file "C:\Users\user.name\VirtualBox VMs\JBRVM\JBRVM.vbox" and attach the zip to a new post here.

And to forestall the inevitable "I don't see any JBRVM.vbox file": Windows by default lies to you about filenames, because Microsoft thinks you are too dumb to understand them. If you disagree then go into Folder options, view options, and disable the option to "Hide extensions of known file types".

Unfortunately, as I mentioned, I deleted the entire contents of my C:\Users\user.name\VirtualBox VMs\, because I was looking deseperately for a solution that would allow me to run VB. All I have is an .ova file. Do I attach this file?

No, don't post the OVA yet.

Please make a new VM with an Ubuntu Desktop ISO. If you can do this, it will show if Virtualbox itself is working on the host computer.

If Virtualbox can run the Ubuntu VM, then try importing the OVA again.

If the error appears, then the OVA has a problem in it. If the import succeeds but the error shows when you try to run the VM, please provide the log file as Mpack requests. Also right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose "Show in Explorer/Finder/File Manager". In the window that opens, zip the VM's .vbox file (not the .vbox-prev file), and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab. (Please make sure all file extensions are shown, so you will be able to see the .vbox extension easier.)

Note that you don't need to keep the Ubuntu VM, you can delete it if you want after this test is complete.

What I really want is to be able to run a "pure" Virtual Box, without any VM, and so far, I'm not managing to get it to work. I'm going to try installing Ubuntu....

Just to clarify some terminology, Virtualbox is the program you install on your computer. Virtualbox runs virtual machines, or "guests" or "VMs". So to really benefit from Virtualbox you do need a VM.

The OVA you were using would bring in a pre-made VM. Ubuntu will also be in a VM.

So I am not sure what ' "pure" Virtual Box without any VM ' really means.

I'm talking about the ability to run the Virtualbox application as it happens right after installing it (see virtual_box_gui_default.jpg). Then I will be able to e.g. import a virtual machine from .ova file
So far I'm not able to run the application itself because I'm getting an error... (see error_vb.png)

So your Virtualbox application does start up. Good.

And you get that error when trying the import?

How did the Ubuntu VM go? It is not in your VM list under "Tools" on the left side of the first screenshot.

Please go to C:\Users\{youraccount}\.Virtualbox, and zip & post the VboxSVC.log, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

No, no... This first image (virtual_box_gui_default.jpg) is an example. It's a situation I'd like to get to, but can't. On my computer, clicking on "Oracle VM VirtualBox" results in the situation shown in the second picture (error_vb.png).
My VM folder is empty:

Oh, so your main Virtualbox window does not show up, and you get the COM error instead?

OK. Please try unplugging every USB device you have attached to your PC except the basic keyboard and mouse, reboot, and try Virtualbox again.

I run my laptop without any peripherals, but the result is still the same.... That is, unable to open the main application window... :(

Thanks. Can you also zip and post "C:\Users\jacek.brzezinski\.VirtualBox\VirtualBox.xml"?
