Same Issue

Post by Cvantilborg »

I am getting the same error on a fresh install.

I can find the folder but not access like the error implies.

I had the same issue.
I downloaded the earlier version (2.0.6) and I installed it, it converted the config xml file. Then I uninstalled it and I installed the new version (2.1.0), and now it's work!
I hope it could help you!

Failed to create virtual box COM object

Post by tkale »

For some reason it did not work for me. Tried following:

1. Installed 2.0.6. It works. Removed it and then installed 2.1.0-41146. Did not work.

2. Installed 2.0.6. Did not remove it but installed 2.1.0. Did not work.

3. Re-downloaded 2.1.0 and tried steps 1 and 2. did not work. Same error dialog pops up.

The 2.0.6 version tried to convert the config xml file?

I had the exact same problem; here's how I fixed it.

1. Uninstall whatever version of VirtualBox you currently have installed.
2. Delete the local hidden folder ("/.VirtualBox", which contains an .XML file which is causing the error) as well as the "/Program Files/Sun/VirtualBox" directory.
3. Install VirtualBox 2.1.0.
4. Enjoy!

PS: It should be noted that my Virtual Machine and Drive folder are on a different harddisk, so I can delete my .VirtualBox file at will.

Simply deleting the .VirtualBox folder, in theory, should fix the problem, as it seems VirtualBox is crashing when trying to read the settings file from that folder. I don't see any reason to uninstall or reinstall.

Simply deleting the .VirtualBox folder worked for me.

Deleting .virtualbox folder

Post by Cvantilborg »

I have tried all the tips about this and nothing works.

I cannot delete the folder. Windows gives me an access denied error.

I have tried running a linux liveCD to delete the folder but then it doesn't exist at all.

Is there any way to point Virtual box at a different folder?

Thanks

Sorry, I don't get it. The .Virtualbox directory contains all my settings and my VMs. Suggesting to delete those is just insane! Or do I understand it wrong?

About that settings file error, you can move your .Virtualbox folder to a different location as a backup, then run VB and it should create a new settings file. Now compare that with the 'corrupted' one and fix the places where it doesn't look like the newly created file. Now move the backup folder back to it's original location and see how VB starts.
