Windows Vista guest now Aborts on shutdown or save

Postby withfries2 » 28. Nov 2008, 19:13

After upgrading to 2.0.6 (running on Mac OS X 10.5.5), my previously well-behaved Windows Vista guest now Aborts every time I shut down.

I've tried shutting it down from Windows, quitting Virtual Box and asking it to save the machine state, and quitting Virtual Box and asking it to send the power off signal.

All three lead to the same "Aborted" state, and when I boot it up, it goes through the entire power up cycle with an offer to start Windows in Safe Mode.

Anyone else seeing this after the 2.0.6 upgrade?

New virtual machines aborting now too

Postby withfries2 » 30. Nov 2008, 11:50

Hmmm...thinking that I had gotten something corrupted in my virtual machine, I created a brand new Windows XP Pro virtual machine (fresh install to a new virtual disk), and this is exhibiting the exact same behavior.

Anytime I try to save the machine state, Virtual Box seems to write the files it needs, the UI goes from "Running" to "Saving" -- and then to "Aborted". When I start the machine again, it will go through what looks like a cold boot, though will eventually get back to the (file system) state I left it in.

So no one else is seeing this 2.0.6?

I have completely fresh install of 2.0.6 on 10.5.5 with a completely new Vita Home Premium and it work lke a dream, very fast, I am impressed.

I think reading the threads I'll be using the logic, if it ain't broke don't fix it, everything works me.

Solved my own problem

Postby withfries2 » 1. Dec 2008, 07:36

Solved my own problem and thought I'd post the solution here in case anyone else runs into this problem and is searching Google for an answer.

If you enable the IO APIC option under General settings, this problem goes away. I'm not sure if I changed it or the default setting changed in 2.0.6, but in either case, just Enable the IO APIC option (select your VM, hit the Settings button at the top, go the Advanced tab, and select the Enable IO APIC checkbox under Extended Features), and Virtual Box will save and shut down cleanly without getting to the dread Aborted state.

Cheers.

Just thought I'd post and let everyone know I am having a similar problem, but the above [for me at least] isn't a fix-- I have had IO APIC already turned on since install, and this is still happening. So give the fix a try, but if you're like me and already have that setting checked, then there must be some additional problem going on. I'll post again if I figure it out.
:!: WARNING: Do NOT UNcheck the IO APIC if you installed with it checked!! Windows will freak out! At least, that's what the VirtualBox docs say-- I haven't tried it myself...

 UPDATE:
Mysteriously, I just now had one successful save machine state-- it made it all the way through the progress bar, and listed the state as "Saved". I did not change anything to cause it. However, it also crashed on resume, once again listing as "Aborted". Thoughts, anyone? :?

Try disabling the sound in the guest settings and see if it continues to abort.
Also to try to isolate the cause you can try disabling the USB if the sound does not allow you to shut down properly.

I have Windows XP and it gave me the same problem. Thanks to Perryg's post the problem is gone once I disabled USB. Now I can save the VM.
