[Solved] -1607 VERR_PGM_HANDLER_NOT_FOUND

Post by horkets »

Dear community,

One of my VM (Ubuntu 18.04 server) is in guru meditation state since I changed the disk space from 10 Go to 20 Go using the VBox GUI and restarted the VM with VBox GUI..

Error in log is -1607 VERR_PGM_HANDLER_NOT_FOUND

Would you know what I can do to fix the problem to be able to restart the VM as usual?

My host system is ubuntu 18.04 desktop.
Virtualbox version up to date to the latest.

I attached the logs for more information.

Thank you in advance, a little help would be very appreciated.

I'm not seeing it in the log, but was this VM in a suspended state when you resized the disk? Does it have snapshots?

Actually, maybe I am seeing a suspended state in the log:
00:00:00.023739 Console: Machine state changed to 'Restoring'
Obviously, replacing the hard drive on a hibernated PC is a pretty radical thing to do. All you can do now is discard the saved state, leaving the VM in a crash consistent state.

Thanks for the reply.
I don't remember about the suspended state but I may have adapt the space in suspended state indeed...
How do I discard the saved state?

Right click VM in manager | Discard saved state.

Ok, problem solved, not in guru medidation state anymore ... ?

I just did nothing but accept the Ubuntu OS usual update request and restarted the machine as always.
VM can now be started normally!

So, now I can restart the VM again, I did a CTRL + D and I see this

It's in french, but you can easily see that virtual disk space is 20 Gigs and Real disk space is +- 10 Go. What's the next step to change this real space ?

Thanks for your help :)

Thanks for the answer mpack, unfortunately, the only thing I could do yesterday was to display the logs and the 3 last options of that list...
In the meantime, I realize that the problem disappear after Ubuntu OS/application update.

The "Virtual" size is how big the guest disk looks to the guest OS. The "Real" size is how much space the virtual disk file takes up on the host PC's hard drive.

Your guest's drive is a 'dynamic' disk. It starts off tiny and gets bigger as the guest writes data to it. It will grow up to the size the disk was made to be (the "virtual" size).

You don't have to do anything about this size discrepancy.

However, I see that in your original post you wanted the guest disk size to increase from 10GB to 20GB. It appears you have succeeded in doing that on Virtualbox's side. Inside the guest, though, your partitions need to be adjusted to account for the larger space available. Use your guest's partition manager to change the partitions to use the new space available.

Hi,
I tryed with cfdisk, but I still can't change the disk size.
I tried to restart, to clone from current to new disk, from current to bigger existing one, but none helped.
I can't figure what I'm doing wrong here.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
H

Unfortunately no.

You have essentially replaced your guest's disk with a larger disk, with all the data thereon imaged to the larger disk. You must now tell the OS to use the new space. The same thing would happen if you replaced your real PC's hard drive with a larger hard drive and imaged the data over. You would have to tell the OS there's more space and adjust the partitions appropriately. Your computer's motherboard manufacturer or hard drive manufacturer would not be able to help.

Virtualbox just provides 'motherboards' and 'hard drives'. How the guest OS adjusts its partitions is not something Virtualbox knows. How to do this is between you and your guest OS, via Google and your guest OS's help channels. Virtualbox cannot help with this.

(I will mention that Gparted is a partition manager too.)

Hi,

Gparted was indeed the solution.
As I installed ubuntu server (=> no GUI), I had to boot from a live ubuntu CD to get GParted.
It did the job.

Thank you all for the help!
