6.0.12: VboxSVGA graphical glitches - unusable (#18914)

Post by 0x00 »

ModEdit; related ticket: #18914: VBoxSVGA 3D rendering problems
Hi,

since I have upgraded from Virtualbox 5 to 6 end of last year, I have graphical issues. VboxVGA seems to be usable but I still experience blue screens all the time (see viewtopic.php?f=2&t=93939 - not tested with 6.0.12 yet, as I have just installed it).

Now I have upgraded to version 6.0.12 and wanted to try the VboxSVGA driver again but it still does not work for me and I hope all of this can somehow be fixed for 6.1.0 when VboxVGA may be removed.

Previously I had issues with Skype (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=91264), now that we are using MS Teams it seems to be using the same graphics libraries, MS Teams or also MS Word is completely unusable and only shows a black window. Also the menu bar at the bottom shows some black boxes when hovering over the icons. I don't have those issues with the VboxVGA driver.

Attached is the log when starting my Windows 10 vm and running MS teams + Word (I have upgraded the guest additions there as well) and a screenshot showing my desktop.

version 6.0.14 does not fix the issue for me, still black boxes when hovering over the Windows bar at the bottom, or MS Teams is also completely black. I have disabled 3D acceleration again and it seems to be fine for now.

Have you tried to disable the hardware acceleration in MS office.

I have the same "black box" issue and it persists on 6.0.14. For me the application windows don't black out, it's a section of the background/monitor. When I drag an app over it, it ghosts and doesn't redraw what is supposed to be there (see attached).

Turn off 3d acceleration and it doesn't happen anymore, but many drawing operations get laggy..

We need to see a complete VBox.log, from a complete VM run, where the problem occurs:
  • Start the VM from cold-boot (not from a paused or saved state) / Observe or recreate the problem / Shutdown the VM (force close it if you have to).
  • With the VM completely shut down (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Attached is the log. I realized what is probably a critical clue while trying to take a screen snip.

In this setup there are two monitors attached to the VM. The left is 1920x1200 and center is is 2560x1440. The black rectangles which do not render a background on the center monitor are exactly aligned with the top edge of the 1920 pixel height of the left monitor. I highly doubt this is a coincidence. The picture attached uses an instance of Notepad.exe stretched across both displays to illustrate the alignment.

Also note that applications/foregrounds do render correctly - it is only the background that does not render.

Please try the latest (6.0.x revision 134343+) build from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds

Both the host package and the guest additions must be updated.

6.1.0 does not fix the issue either :( I have updated the bug report. I also can't enable 2D acceleration anymore, if I check the box and re-enter the settings, it just is disabled again.
