How Do You Storage Used By Guest.

Post by Fergus160 »

I have set up a test VM to play with and learn a bit more about them before setting up the real one. I allocated a fixed 20 GB of hard disk space to the VM so how do I find out how much has actually been used to what free space is left? I have looked at settings / storage and also tried hovering over and right click/properties on the VDI file, but they all give me 20GB which is what I allocated.

Two ways, if the guest drive file was made Dynamic:

1. Check in the guest OS how much free space you have left.

2. Click the drive under its controller in the guest Storage settings. The right pane will tell you how big it can get and what size it is now.

If your drive file was set to Fixed, it is already the maximum size on the host disk, and only #1 above will work.

Just like in the physical world, the capacity of a disk drive never changes, no matter what you write to its sectors.

Why did you choose fixed size? And why so small? In fact I assume the latter is a consequence of the former.

Who-ever told you "fixed" was a good idea, best de-friend them.
