Re: login manager is not displaying the screen at all rhel 7.6
Could be a known problem. Please start your guest from cold boot (not saved state), and let it run until you see the "can't-see-anything" problem. If you can shut down the guest from within the guest OS, do so. Then post the log, zipped, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.harishpathangay wrote:only black screen
If the problem is as I think it is, you may not get to a point you can shut down the guest from within the guest OS. If so, just close the guest window, power down the guest, and post the zipped log.

Re: login manager is not displaying the screen at all rhel 7.6
hi,
I tried with cold boot. rhel 7.6.
please note that the vm will boot into multi-user.target
after logging into console, I will be going into gui mode by using command, "systemctl isolate graphical.target"
please find attached log.
I even tried with default graphical.target, still getting the blank screen issue.
I am adding multiple logs. vbox-all.zip contains multiple log files, if needed.
thanks,
harish p

Re: login manager is not displaying the screen at all rhel 7.6
The problem is not what I suspected. I looked for possible slow-run issues, couldn't find any in the log, no Hyper-V issues:
I can't tell what virtual video card you are using. There's three now: see the manual, section 3.6.1, under Graphics Controller. Try VMSVGA or VBoxVGA.
00:00:05.125014 HM: HMR3Init: VT-x w/ nested paging and unrestricted guest execution hw support
00:00:06.209571 HM: Using VT-x implementation 2.0
You should clear this up, or at least be prepared to expect possible issues. Virtualbox only uses physical cores, not hyperthreads, so your I5-like processor is really an I3 with hyperthreads. My laptop CPU is the same. Your guest is set to use all the physical cores on your host. If it tries to do so your host may suffer sluggishness. Not that it will, mind: I have run two-processor guests on my laptop just fine, but I know what could happen.00:00:05.124167 NumCPUs <integer> = 0x0000000000000002 (2)

If the Virtualbox window is open, and displaying the guest OS doing something guest-OS-ish, then Virtualbox is working and the problem resides within the guest OS itself, and you should also hunt issues as if you were working on a real PC.harishpathangay wrote:please note that the vm will boot into multi-user.target
I may have misunderstood the problem. Looks like you're able to log in? Is it only a full-screen issue? Use the Guest Additions ISO that came with Virtualbox for the best results.harishpathangay wrote:login manager is not displaying the screen at all.

Re: login manager is not displaying the screen at all rhel 7.6
hi,
the system is up and running in the background. I can connect to guest os [rhel 7.6] from putty or ssh session.
system is pretty much up, I can login transfer files, even start db2 services etc...the issue is the VM is not displaying the login manager.
if I uninstall virtual box guest additions, I am able to go into login screen and login into the system in gui with a less resolution.[like not the typical full screen]
only if I install vbox guest additions I am facing issue with login screen going blank.
it is definitely some issue happening after installation of guest additions. that is for certain.
the issue is on centos 7.6 also.
I have another rhel 7.6 [another vbox/vm], the login screen works fine here.
I have ubuntu budgie, ubuntu server,mx Linux, ubuntu mate, solidex, kubuntu, open suse and a few more. none of them have any issues with screen display or login manager. Only RHEL/Centos are facing issues.
I don't know C or Linux, but not new to computers or servers, it is definitely not in the guest os. VBOX guest addition compatibility or some setting issue for sure in video display.
hope some one is having success in rhel 7.6 with vbox 6.0.10 can help me if possible.
thanks,
harish pathangay

hi,
errors in os log.
hope that helps.
also it is getting stuck at gnome-greeter stuff and not able to open a gnome-session.
also, it could be related to this issue, but can someone corroborate. are any of you guys facing same issue?

Not a Linux guy, but I would, as a test, install another test guest with Ubuntu and Guest Additions from the GAs ISO coming with Virtualbox, and see if it boots and works correctly. If it does, then your issue is quite likely in the guest OS itself, and maybe the Guest Additions. Linux subforum is best for further help, I'd say.

Re: login manager is not displaying the screen at all rhel 7.6
I have raised issue in centos forum. but what is surprising is no one else is facing issues or errors not observed by any one else in the forum. I thought some one in virtual box forum might be aware of the issue. but surprisingly no one is.
I do not want to try with ubuntu or other os, because they could be in different versions.
my guess what is going to happen...
centos guys will say they are not supporting virtualized environment, they will help only on real hardware.
virtual box guys will pass on the blame on as OS issue.
it is not something new to me. I am not expert to fix the issue, leave it to the creators of open source enthusiast.
thanks,
harish p

You have a very unusual situation, especially for the subforum you asked the question in.harishpathangay wrote: I thought some one in virtual box forum might be aware of the issue. but surprisingly no one is.

Suit yourself, but asking for help then blatantly refusing to engage in simple troubleshooting tasks may put off the helpers. Sometimes the helper may not explain exactly why he/she asks for a certain step, so as to not muddy the waters. You certainly can feel free to ask a question about why it might be necessary, or offer a different idea, such as a fresh CentOS guest instead of an Ubuntu, but a "I'm not going to"? Major turn-off, let-you-wither-on-the-vine-style. It's up to you...harishpathangay wrote:I do not want to try with ubuntu or other os
Not very likely to happen, I'd say, unless it turns out to be a problem with your specific installation in the guest, which does come up at times.harishpathangay wrote:my guess what is going to happen...virtual box guys will pass on the blame on as OS issue
Sorry if I confused you, I meant this Linux subforum.harishpathangay wrote:I have raised issue in centos forum

Re: login manager is not displaying the screen at all rhel 7.6
Hi,
Installed VM Ware Player [another virtualization tool, not from oracle I guess.]
Fresh Centos 7.6 Installed, Full Screen GUI No Issues.
The problem appears only after installing oracle virtual box guest additions when using Oracle Virtual Box for VM simulation.
Something Oracle Virtual Box is not doing correct. Don't know what.
Installing another OS with so many different versions, kernels features is not the way to help.
You can ask for more logs may be, but definitely not another completely different OS installation, at least I do not have that much luxury in terms of time.
Please do not take my words in wrong sense.
Please consider thread closed.
Thanks,
Harish Pathangay
