Fedora 30 - guest additions shared folder

Post by janpeter »

Hi

This post is very similar to one I made for Fedora 29.
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=90578&p=434587&hili ... er#p434488

I have made the following without results:

1) Standard VBox installation of guest additions using VBox procedure
gave the results as befor that: windows scaling, shared clipboard, and drag and drop worked
as expected but NOT shared folders.

The printed log on the screen did NOT indicate any error of installation of guest additions
see enclosed screenshot.

2) I then followed the recipe from previous post that works for Fedora 29 i.e.
$sudo dnf -y update
$sudo dnf -y install gcc automaker make kernel-headers kernel-devel perl
$sudo yum install elfutils-libelf-devel
Restarted the machine.
Still shared-folders not connected

3) I took away and re-installed shared-folders in VBox using the menu while Fedora 30 was running.
Still shared-folders not connected

What to try next?

Appreciate some help!

  1. You're supposed to install the GAs after you get the necessary packages via 'dnf install', not before. And if you install the GAs (or attempt to) before getting the packages, just simply getting the packages won't do nothing; you got to re-install the GAs. Please do.
  2. We need to see a complete VBox.log, from a complete VM run, where the problem occurs:
    • Start the VM from cold-boot (not from a paused or saved state) / Observe problem / Shutdown the VM (force close it if you have to).
    • With the VM completely shut down (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
    • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response. See the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form.

janpeter ... were you able to solve your problem? Because I have a problem like yours ... and I'm looking for a solution.

Using VBox software for host and guest-additions from 'virtualbox.org'
host Win10 1809
guest Fedora 30 kde
intel i7-6700
16GB ram on motherboard with 4GB alloc to the guest.

Thanks,
JC

You should NOT be using the Guest Additions (GAs) that you download separately. You should be using the GAs that come bundled with your VirtualBox installation, by having focus on the VM and going to the host's "Devices" menu » "Insert GAs ISO image...".

Secondly, I would like to see the output of the GAs installation in the guest, even as a cropped/focused image of the Terminal inside the guest.

Since version 6.0.2 I have the same problem with Lubuntu like you. As a workaround I use the guest additions 6.0.0 and it works. Maybe it will also help you until the problem is solved.

racoon ... Thanks for you suggestion ... I finally found time to gave it a try but it does not work in my case. I'm glad it worked for you, but my Fedora 30 puts up a good fight. Sigh.

Can you all please try the latest 6.0.x TestBuilds? I seem to remember some fixes for F30, F31 landing in there...

I tried vb 6.0.9.131183 on my test partition and it failed to start. See the 2 attachments but here is the crux ...
NtCreateFile(\Device\VBoxDrvStub) failed: 0x0000034
STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND (0 retries) (rc-101)
I did a reboot before I tried to start the vm guest. It was the first time I can recall that vbox told me to reboot after it's upgrade. :)

This is with host Win 10 1903
Guest fedora 30
Motherboard 16gb
guest 4gb
intel i7-6700

Thanks,
JC

@jrc55
Was there an error during the installation? Do you happen to have EFI Secure Boot enabled? Did you read the relevant paragraph in the TestBuilds page?

oops. In my haste I did not read the fine print. Sorry. I have turned off my secure boot and now all is well with the shared folder .... though I can't speak for janpeter who is the original author of this thread.

Thanks for your help and please pass along a "many thanks" to the developers for me.

Hi,
I took a pause from this problem but tried again and it still does not work.

1) I have first done the dnf installations etc
2) I have then re-installed GA using the the menu in VBox...(and nothing else)
3) I did restart the machine
4) I did take away and put back shared-folder when the VM is running
5) I did take away and put back shared-folder when the VW was not running - and then startup again.

6) I read the other peoples comments and advices. I still run VBox 5.2.30 and wait to update to 6.x.
Tried to find setting EFI Secure Boot but could not find and I think this switch belongs to ver 6.x

Enclosed you find my log-file

Would appreciate some advice.

PS Host system as declared macOS 10.14.5 and other VM I have no problems with Windows10, Ubuntu 16.04, 18.04

janpeter ... the issue with uefi secure boot is only for Win10 hosts using a test build. It requires the real computer to have secure boot turn off when the computer is booted ... not the guest. But it will not effect your mac os. Go ahead and try a 5.2 or 6.0 test build. I'm sure the vbox developers would be pleased to hear if it is ok.

Seems we need bleeding edge test builds of VirtualBox to be able to run Fedora 30 with guest additions.
I think I then wait until next version of VirtualBox.
