Linux and Windows Guests Sometimes Cause Macbook to Reboot

Post by skinlayers »

MacBook Pro 15-inch, 2018
6x 2.9GHz Core i9
32GB RAM
macOS 10.14.5

Virtualbox: 6.0.8 (with extension pack)
Guests: Windows 10 (1903), Windows Server 2019, Debian Buster Server (Daily 2019-05-29)

Ever since updating to macOS 10.14.5, and Virtualbox 6.0.8, I've been having intermittent freezing and reboots on my Macbook Pro while booting Windows VMs. It seems to happen about 25% - 50% of the time in Windows 10 (1903), Windows Server 2019, and WinPE (from 1903), while my Ubuntu 18.04 server VM doesn't seem to trigger the issue. The BIOS POST is fine, but the freezing seems to occur right after the Windows logo loads on the screen. It usually reboots 5 - 10 seconds after the entire host has frozen. I've tried completely deleting and recreating the VMs, but am still experiencing the same issue. Any thoughts?

Edit:

Code: Select all

$ kextstat | grep -v com.apple

Edit 2: Just had it happen again, but while installing the current daily release of debian buster server. At this point, I'm going to try downgrading to 6.0.6. The only commonality I can find is it seems to happen during boot for windows, and during an OS install for debian. Maybe it's related to disk access?

Thank you,
Gabriel Totusek

Just had it happen with 6.0.6. Looks like my 10.14.5 install has compatibility issues...?

Not sure why you're seeing that, your logs look fine. I would stick with 6.0.8 and see what happens, there's no point in moving backwards.

Anything non-standard installed on your system that would modify your system? I'm not talking about Firefox and Chrome, I'm talking about apps that require for example an admin password to get installed. Anything like that? Any 3rd connections, like HDMI monitors (especially with sound), external HDs, NAS, etc?
