Win10 Build 18908+ - VirtualBox Installer fails with 1603 if VirtualBox USB Support is selected

Post by Jacob Klein »

Win10 Build 18908+ - VirtualBox Installer fails with status 1603 if VirtualBox USB Support is selected

Installer error says:
Installation failed! Error: Fatal error during installation.

Event viewer says:
Installation success or error status: 1603.

Workaround is to uncheck VirtualBox USB Support, and then installation completes successfully.
Installers appear to be working fine on non-Insider builds. I suspect this is an OS issue.

Hey Jacob, can you do a quick test with the 6.0.9 series? I don't expect the situation to be different, just want a confirmation I guess...

Hi socratis,

Thanks for the reminder. I actually already did the tests, but forgot to report them. I re-did the tests just now, too.

I confirm the same problem, and the same workaround, on:
- Oracle VirtualBox v5.2.30 Build 130521
- Oracle VirtualBox v5.2.31 Test Build 130893
- Oracle VirtualBox v6.0.8 Build 130520
- Oracle VirtualBox v6.0.9 Test Build 130970

In an ideal world, would love to have an Oracle dev chime in for confirmation on whether they believe this is:
- an Oracle bug
- a Microsoft bug
- a new incompatibility that Oracle will have to resolve later

Thanks,
Jacob

My money would be on "a new incompatibility that Oracle will have to resolve later" given the test matrix that you've done.

Still no luck?

I can confirm that

VirtualBox-6.0.8-130520-Win
VirtualBox-6.0.9-131254-Win

Will not work on insider Preview Windows 10 Pro Build 18908.rs_prerelease.190524-1658

You can use the workaround of unselecting the USB option, to install it, right? And then it does work just fine otherwise, right?

Yes please - an explanation would be helpful. Because your first 2 posts have been quite confusing so far.

This thread is about: Win10 Build 18908+ - VirtualBox Installer fails with 1603 if VirtualBox USB Support is selected
Post 1 has a workaround, stating that you can unselect the USB option, and things will work.
Does that match the behavior you saw?

Yes unselecting the usb option is the only way to install without failing. But i have been able to install the usb manually from extracting the the stock exe and then after that is done, I have extracted the 64bit msi using 7zip. All this goes to the %TEMP% folder btw. Then cd to the newly created msi extraction directory and run powershell from within that directory with this command "Dir | Rename-Item -NewName { $_.name -replace "file_","" }" without the quotes. It removes the "file_" from all the files that have that name. Then from there to make it easier to work with delete everything that is not a .inf, .cat, or a .sys file. If you dont need to delete the files then just rename "VBoxUSB_W10.cat" to "VBoxUSB.cat" and "VBoxUSBMon_W10.cat" to "VBoxUSBMon.cat". After that just right click on every .inf file and click install. This is most likely not needed but i was also have trouble with the network adapter and this fixed it as well. For just the usb to work you just need to right click and install from these two files. "VBoxUSB.inf" and "VBoxUSBMon.inf"

I'm pretty sure that is all that is needed. Worth mentioning i am also running test mode on my insider preview with full sdk, wdk, visio studio 2017 installed. Dont think that matters as the .cat files were signed.

I apologize. I should have said yes normal installation does not work. But unchecking the install usb option does work. After that I should have said i have a work around for those that want the usb support. Sorry for the miscommunication. LOL

Thanks for the feedback. Your detailed USB workaround, is probably very useful for anyone who requires VirtualBox USB support, on a recent Windows Insider build. :)
I guess I'm lucky that I don't need that.

I'm waiting on Microsoft or Oracle to make it work correctly.
