Windows 10 host, USB captured but not apreaing in guest

Post by Patrykb »

I have a problem with USB passthrough. I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and discovered that on my particular laptop (Precision e7510) usb does not work.
Previously I used Windows 7 and everything was OK. Also I'm using the same virtual machines on another laptop with Windows 10 Dell e7540 and usb works fine there.

I did a clean install of Dell's Windows 10 image on my laptop and just after all Windows updates, installed latest Virtual Box 6.0.08 with guest additions.
Version 6.0.8 r130520 (Qt5.6.2)
Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack 6.0.8r130520

Both laptops have only USB 3.0 and the VMs are also set up to use xHCI 3.0.

When I try to attach some USB device it gets captured and disappears form the host but it does not appear in the guest system and also there is no "tick" by the name of the device in VB menu although it's says it's captured.
When I shut down the VB and close VB manager the USB device shows up again the host system.

I noticed that there is nothing in the VMs log when I plug the USB thumbdrive only in Virtual Box logs

Please post the output of:
  •
    VBoxManage list usbfilters
    VBoxManage showvminfo "<Your_Virtual_Machine_Name>"
when run from a Command Prompt located at "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox", or wherever your default installation is.

Also, can you try the latest TestBuild?

I have the same exact error on a Lenovo T480 after updating Windows 10 today.

It takes it out of the USB devices of my host machine but on my VM it does not appear. It is visible in my Host machine once I shut down VM.

Please read the following thread: USB basics and troubleshooting, all of the posts.

If you still have a problem after reading through the whole thing, please follow the advice of the last post, #8: Asking for help and post the information requested.

And as I said, please don't bother reporting back if you haven't tried the latest Testbuild, it contains several USB regression fixes.

Hey guys,

Just got my USB devices back in my VM by upgrading to testbuild 6.0.9 r130662 (Qt5.6.2) and guest additions 6.0.9r130641.
The host is Win10 on Thinkpad T460, while the guest is win7.

Thank you, @socratis.

Sadly installing 6.0.9 r130662 didn't work. Mine said that Windows blocked the installation of unsigned drivers. :(

Perhaps due to the corporate policy in my laptop.

No. Did you read the related paragraph in the TestBuilds page? The one that's titled "Installing Windows test builds"? Please do.
(Hint: UEFI secure boot)

HI Socratis,

I did miss that step. I got the testbuild installed again but still not working. If I select my USB device it goes from Busy to Caputured but still not available.

@Gtelecom
I told you to do a couple of things. Apparently you didn't. I don't really like to repeat myself, when I'm giving some advice I expect that advice to be followed:

Hi,

So new to this forum but having the same issue outlined here in that when I try and add (in this case) a wireless dongle it is giving me error already outline i.e. failed to attach because it is busy and it is showing that no USB devices as attached.

I am using VB 6.0.8 r130520 on a Dell Precision 5520 host which is running Windows 10 and the VM is Windows 2016 server.

I have followed the instructions outlined in the troubleshooting but unfortunately I don't have the required permissions to get the test builds installed.

I have attached the required information requested as part of a new post and hopefully haven't missed anything but apologies if I have.

Any information that leads to us resolving this would be a life saver.

That's not the same problem as the OP's.

Please read the following thread: USB basics and troubleshooting, all of the posts.

If you still have a problem after reading through the whole thing, please follow the advice of the last post, #8: Asking for help and post the information requested.

Pay special attention to the filters and plugging the dongle after you've started the VM.

Hello to all experts,

(my first post in any forum, sorry when i do mistakes in presenting my question)

I have a problem with USB passthrough. I have real everthing tried in the past. But now i need your help and your experience!

I'm runing on VM 6.0.12 r133076. Extension pack is alsow the 6.0.12 r 133076. Until now i had not yet the luck to get any usb device (Stick or Siemens CP5711) connected to the guests on my Dell-Precision 7730 with 32 GB of Ram and "Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8850H CPU @ 2.60 GHz".

Until last week i had VM 6.0.10 runing. Also in that version the passthrough didn't work.

Normally i'm working and starting the VM as a normal user (not as an adminstrator) Even when i start it as an administrator the passthrough is not working.

Even in different Guestsystems (Windows 7 professional 64 bits, Windows 7 professional 32 Bits, Windows 7 home 32 bits) it does not work.

On my hosts (from the company and on my private Laptop) i'm running under Windows 10 Version 1903 Systembuild 18362.356. Even in the Version before 1903 it didn't work.

On my private Laptop it works!

When I try to attach some USB device it gets captured and disappears form the host but it does not appear in the guest system and also there is no "tick" by the name of the device in VB menu although it's says it's captured.
When I shut down the VB and close VB manager the USB device shows up again the host system.

I hope that you can help me.

Sincerly NicSysVac

Looks like you found and used Socratis' USB tutorial. Good work, and good thorough info in your post!

If I read your guest log right, you're using the USB 3 xHCI device. All of your guests, including the logged one posted, are Windows 7. Did you install the USB 3 drivers for Windows 7 mentioned in step 6 of the tutorial?

Hello scottgus1.

Thank you for your answer.

That was one of the last actions i did in the logged Windows 7 installation. I hope that it worked.

Actually i do not have anymore an Idea.

I still have a question concering the rights of the user on the vm-host! Need i here to install or to make passthrough USB's to the guest more than normal user rights (for example, must i be Administrator) or might some company policies be the reason of my problem?

Passing USB devices into the guest does not require run-as-administrator.

Your posted log shows the Siemens device as captured:
UUID: d7071712-4562-4d2e-a2da-40f78f573f3a
VendorId: 0x0908 (0908)
ProductId: 0x01f4 (01F4)
Revision: 0.1 (0001)
Port: 1
USB version/speed: 2/High
Manufacturer: Siemens AG
Product: CP 5711
SerialNumber: SVPDN051083
Address: {36fc9e60-c465-11cf-8056-444553540000}\0019
Current State: Captured
meaning it's in a guest somewhere. Your log does not show the "General Udisk" captured, but it shows a USB audio device captured.

Let's try this: Unplug both USB devices. Shut down all your guests and reboot your host. Pick one guest, make sure both filters are set correctly. Start the guest, and be sure the USB 3 drivers are installed in the guest OS. Open your Device Manage on the host PC OS and in the guest OS, showing the USB devices section on each. Plug in the Siemens device and wait for the host PC Device manager to show the Virtualbox USB filter device. Now what does the guest Device Manager USB devices section do? Maybe a screenshot? (use Upload Attachment, like you did with the logs, and crop & resize to get under the 128kB forum limit. PNG is best.) And whether the guest showed any USB activity or not, shut down the guest and post that guest's log again, please.
