exiting full screen on Fedora guest caused reboot

Post by ZenJim »

I was working in a Fedora 30 guest on my iMac running macOS 10.14.5 and VirtualBox 6.0.6 and pressed command-F to go full screen. The Fedora window didn't go full screen, just had a big black border around the same size screen as when it was just in a window. So I pressed command-F again to exit full screen. The whole screen went black. I waited several seconds then pressed ESC and suddenly my iMac is rebooting and there's the Apple logo.

Is this reproducible? If yes, please state the exact steps.

PS. For future reference you should ZIP your logs. It helps you, it helps us, it helps the server, it helps save a (virtual) tree or two... ;)

Luckily so far it hasn't happened again. Maybe a one time glitch? I've also upgraded macOS and VirtualBox since this incident.

I'll try to remember about the logs, thanks for the tip!

Issue occurred again. Except this time I was going through all my guests to update guest additions and when I opened Fedora guest, my iMacs screen went black and rebooted.

some guests or VirtualBox itself causing my iMac to spontaneously reboot.
I thought this was happening in just my Fedora guest but this time it happened when I was in MX Linux and openSUSE.
On Fedora it happened once when I was shutting down the guest. Then again once when I was starting the guest.
Just now it happened while running MX Linux and openSUSE. I was running updates on both when suddenly my screen goes black and then I get a message saying my computer was restarted because of an issue.

VirtualBox v6.0.8
macOS 10.14.5

logs for MX Linux and openSUSE attached.

my mistake, I was running Oracle Linux not MX Linux. [got 18 different distress and got mixed up where I was in the update process]

now openSuse boots to grub rescue mode and Oracle linux is failing to load almost everything during boot. Still booting.

Your log ends abruptly as expected because the host died, and there's nothing out of the ordinary about it. Anything unusual about your iMac setup?

As far as the VM, the only things that I would throw as a last idea are:
  • Lower the CPUs from 3 to 2.
  • Change the GPU from VMSVGA to VBoxVGA.
I don't expect those to make a difference though...

Oh, BTW, removing the [WorksForMe] marking, because ... it doesn't. ;)

issue happened again, this time in a Windows 10 guest. I started the guest, ran windows updates, rebooted, guest screen went black, so I sent shutdown signal and then restarted Windows 10 guest and my iMac screen goes black then says Mac was restarted due to a problem.

As I said previously (note the underlined part):
socratis wrote:Your log ends abruptly as expected because the host died, and there's nothing out of the ordinary about it. Anything unusual about your iMac setup?
I can't diagnose anything from the VBox.log because the host dies, taking the VM before anything useful. Anything that shows in the logs of your host? Start by posting the output of:
  • kextstat | grep -v com.apple

That's a huge, huge, huge red flag! TunTap has been an abandonware since 2015 and is listed as supported for 10.9 and 10.10 (the latest at the time), not the current 10.14.5 that you have, for which even the active VirtualBox has trouble keeping up with. I would definitely uninstall them.

BTW, how did you manage to get them installed in the first place? I highly doubt that 10.14 would let you do that. Even the 10.12 OSX that your iMac18,2 came with, would have issues. Wonder how on earth it survived Gatekeeper...

That's another weird one, and it points to a "Promise Utility". A quick search for the exact kext returns some scary results (My iMac's screen went black), and you have the same situation for the Utility itself. Why do you use that program for?

Finally, mind you that these are the fixed ones, not the dynamically loaded ones. For example, OSXFUSE which is used to mount filesystems foreign to OSX. And I don't know if you're aware, but you have it too, because it's getting installed with 6.0.0 and later. But it doesn't show up, it's only loaded when needed. So, think hard of what other software you might have installed that needs an admin password to get installed.

Hi,
Looks like tap and tun are installed by the VyprVPN app that I've been using.
The Promise Utility is for my Promise Pegasus 2 external RAID drive

I've been having problems with the VyprVPN so I removed tap and tun. Going back to a different vpn for now.

We'll see if this helps.
