Linux guest uses excessive CPU on host

Post by figge »

I run Virtualbox in MacOS on a Macbook Pro 13-inch 2017 with 8 GB RAM and High Sierra. I installed a Manjaro Linux VM the other day, it is the XFCE-version, I allocated 30 GB for the disk and 2 GB for the memory. The Manjaro guest uses excessive CPU any time that I select a desktop icon. I can work with all applications and launch applications from the XFCE panel och whisker menu without problems. But just selecting a desktop icon on the guest halts the VM and it freezes.
CPU use on the guest is low, but the host indicates 140-170% CPU use by the VM.

Any idea what to do?

We need to see a complete VBox.log, from a complete VM run, where the problem occurs:
  • Start the VM from cold-boot (not from a paused or saved state) / Observe problem / Shutdown the VM (force close it if you have to).
  • With the VM completely shut down (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response. See the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form.

Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

140% - 170% ??

I would suspect it's your Intel OpenGL support on the host. I would test the effect of disabling 3D acceleration. I'd also test the effect of bringing the guest additions up to something reasonable: 5.2.0 is pretty ancient for a host running VirtualBox 6.0.4.

If that doesn't fix it then I'd test the effect of disabling audio.

And note: this is a 2 core host, there's a limit (of one) on how many OS's it can run smoothly, simultaneously. Two OS's is always going to cause visible lag.
