[Solved] win7 and win10 images directly from Microsoft won't boot

Microsoft gives these OS images for testing. I tried putting the address here but the forum won't let me put a address in my first post. Just google "free windows image for virtualbox" and it should be the first page.

I downloaded both the WIn10 and the Win7 with IE11. Both won't boot

Steps that I did:
1) click "new" machine in VB
2) use defaults until I get the "Hard Drive" screen
3) find the file from microsoft called "IE11 - Win7-disk001.vdmk"
4) continue with defaults
5) click "start" to launch the instance of Windows 7.

Then I get a black screen saying "Windows failed to start, this may be due to a recent hardware change"

It tries to repair the problem, then I get a message "windows cannot repair the problem"

*When I try it with the windows 10 image, then I get a bit of a different message but I think it's basically the same message.


OSX Mojave
VirtualBox 6.4


Do you have any suggestions?

I don't intend to download that size of file just to find out what it consists of, so you have to tell me.

I'm guessing it's an OVA or OVF appliance, which includes that VMDK file - though the latter was never intended to be used directly in VM.

Appliances should be installed by opening the OVA or OVF file using the File|Import Appliance... feature in the VirtualBox API.
