Cannot setup Sierra or High Sierra under Mojave

Post by Lbutlr »

Running VB 6.0.2 under Mojave 10.14.3. I have an Ubuntu VM setup and working, When I try to setup a Sierra or High Sierra VM, the virtual machine boots to a EFI load screen and does not boot the installation off the InstallESD.dmb image file.

I set the VRAM to 128M, RAM to 4GB (I have 24) and disabled the floppy drive in the boot order list.

The problem that you're having is with an "OSX Guest", not with your "OSX Host", moving accordingly.

Take a look at two related threads: [HowTo] Create OSX ISO from the OSX Install app and [HowTo] Install OSX 10.13 in a VM.

PS. Please attach the image locally in your response (see the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form). Not a lot of people will go to 3rd party sites. Plus, it's more convenient if the image goes along with the message...
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

I did this initially, but the image did not show up and the "image" box was not clickable, to I edited the post to change it to a URL. And if people don't want to go to Dropbox... oh well.

Will take a look at the links, but since InstallESD.dmg is a bootable installer for Mac OS X, it certainly seems like it should work and VB doesn't complain (and Install.ESD.dmg has been used since Mac OS X 10.7).

Since when? And what does it need to boot? Ever booted a VM in VirtualBox with InstallESD.dmg? Ever tried?

If you used the [img] tag to link to a 3rd party site, then yes, it won't work. As I've said, 3rd party sites can't always be trusted, dropbox or not.

Thanks, those instructions did get the process further. The installer now boots and comes up until the point of selecting a language. The mouse is not active at this point (I even plugged in a basic USB mouse, no go. I can arrow down to "Disk Utility" but I cannot select it (return/enter does nothing). The mouse pointer never moves from the upper left corner. The Magic Trackpad is also not recognized, nor the Logitech M570.

I tried both with the USB 3.0 drivers for the extension pack selected per the instructions and with the USB 1.1 default, but no difference.

No mouse in macOS installer

Post by Lbutlr »

When installing macOS Sierra under VB 6.0.2 running under macOS Mojave (10.14.3) the mouse is not active, making it impossible to get past the screen asking you to select install, restore, disk utility, etc. I can move the selection using the keyboard errors, but unlike the language selection screen, I cannot use 'return' to select.

I have a Magic Trackpad, but have also tried connecting a basic two button optical mouse.

We need to see a complete VBox.log, from a complete VM run, where the problem occurs:
  • Start the VM from cold-boot (not from a paused or saved state) / Observe problem / Shutdown the VM (force close it if you have to).
  • With the VM completely shut down (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response. See the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form.
