Thanks @toracat.

I have installed them on my current VM, which already has:
  1. all OS updates
  2. VBoxGuestAdditions_5.2.23-127309.iso
  3. kernel-plus-3.10.0-957.1.3.el7.centos.plus.ay1.x86_64.rpm.
Everything seems rock-solid. I even ran a Selenium-based test of our application's web-based GUI and everything seems perfectly fine.

Thank you so much @toracat!

One hopefully final question. Is there any potential long-term downside to applying any of these fixes? In other words, should I recommend this procedure to the rest of my team, or should we wait until a more formal solution is proven to work?

@Larry Menard

You must mean kernel-3.10.0-957.1.3.bug15570.plus.el7.x86_64.rpm ? This is the version that fixed the graphics driver issue (in addition to the mouse problem).

The centosplus kernel was provided for testing purposes. It is okay to keep using it for a short period of time. I'm doing my best to get the patch into the RHEL (therefore CentOS) kernel. Hopefully it does not take long but you never know. In the meantime, if a serious security bug is discovered for the kernel and RH does not get the fix in time, I will update the patched centosplus kernel and make it available.

Thanks @toracat
These patches worked for me too.
My platform: VirtualBox 6.0 (host extension pack and guest addition), host OS is Mac Mojave, guest OS Centos 7 (18_10) on MacBook Pro laptop

Background:
I had tried a lot of suggested fixes (removing/changing USB, changing Host key from command to other combinations changing between using touchpad and wired mouse, changing configuration between P/S and tablet) and nothing worked until I installed these patches. I was able to get the mouse working again without rebooting the VM (although rebooting the VM also made the mouse work again for a few minutes) by playing with the function keys, but sometimes it took a couple of minutes, and then it would quit again after a few minutes.

@hines57

Thanks for the feedback. Let's hope Red Hat publishes the patched kernel soon.

I see that Oracle has announced the availability of version 6.0.0. I personally still need to run the occasional 32-bit Guest so I cannot make the upgrade, but I wonder if it also has these same issues on RHEL/CentOS 7. If the basic problem is in the Guest OS then I suspect it will.

32bit guests are still supported with VirtualBox 6.0.0. It is the support for 32bit hosts that has been removed.

Yes, the mouse problem is caused by the kernel in the guest, so it must be fixed through a kernel update.

Hey everyone,

Sorry to keep dredging up this old topic, but it is relevant.

Is there a link to a specific RHEL 7 bug that we can follow to see when they actually fix this? And even so, when RH does fix it, how can we tell when CentOS 7 picks up that specific change?

Thanks.

Here is the bug report. It is not open to the public. If you register with bugzilla.redhat.com and let me know the email address you used for the registration, I can add it to the CC list.

My hope is that the next update to the RHEL kernel will come with the patch. Then the patched CentOS kernel will follow usually in a day or two.

Alternatively, you can follow the CentOS bug that deals with the issue.

I'll just monitor the CentOS bug. Thanks again, toracat.

Very happy to confirm that as reported in the CentOS bug tracker (https://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=15570), everything seems to be back to normal after updating to the current CentOS kernel.

Thanks, toracat.
